CHARLESTON, WV - The West Virginia Power squeezed by the 1st-Half Division Champion Hickory Crawdads, 6-5, avoiding the series sweep before 3,574 fans at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night.

The Crawdads (54-36, 14-8) took an early lead with three runs against RHP Jameson Taillon in the top of the first inning. SS Jurickson Profar hit a double down the left field line, which was misplayed by LF Rogelio Noris, enabling Profar to get all the way to third on the play. CF Teodoro Martinez followed with a walk, putting runners at the corners. On a pitch to 1B Andrew Clark, Martinez broke for second base, starting a delayed double steal with Profar swiping home plate for the 1-0 lead. One out later, Martinez moved to third on a single by RF Josh Richmond. DH Christian Villanueva lined an RBI double to left field, scoring Martinez and moving Richmond all the way to third. Richmond raced home on an RBI grounder by LF Jake Skole, capping the rally at 3-0.

The Power (42-48, 7-15) loaded the bases with no one out to begin the bottom of the first against RHP Nick Tepesch. Tepesch and the Crawdads worked out of the jam with only one run scoring on a sacrifice fly by 1B Cole White, making it 3-1.

Hickory stretched the lead right back out in the top of the second. 3B Yefry Castillo led off with a single and moved to second on a bunt single by 2B Odubel Herrera. Both runners moved up ninety feet on a sacrifice bunt by Profar, before Martinez brought Castillo in from third on an RBI ground out, putting the Crawdads up, 4-1.

West Virginia again rallied though, tying the game with three runs in the bottom of the second. With one on and no outs, LF Rogelio Noris knocked a two-run homer over the left field wall, bringing the Power within one run, 4-3. Two outs later, DH Andy Vasquez extended the inning with a triple, and then scored on an error charged to Clark when a sharp grounder by CF Mel Rojas, Jr. got by him, tying it at 4-4.

The Crawdads again moved back in front, striking for another run against Taillon in the top of the fourth. C Kellin Deglan led off with an infield single. After Taillon retired the next two batters, Deglan raced all the way in on an RBI double to center field by Profar, lifting Hickory ahead, 5-4.

The Power pulled even on the scoreboard again, plating a run in the bottom of the sixth. RF Justin Howard led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out. After Tepesch induced a foul out for the second out in the inning, 3B Chase Lyles placed an RBI single to center, squaring the score, 5-5.

West Virginia then moved in front for the first time all game, striking against RHP Colby Killian (L, 6-4) in the bottom of the seventh. After Killian struck out the first two in the inning, Vasquez kept the frame alive with a single. He broke from first on a hit-and-run base hit by Rojas, Jr. to shallow left and raced all the way in on the basehit to put the Power ahead, 6-5.

LHP Rinku Singh (W, 1-0) completed his three-inning outing with a scoreless top of the eighth, before giving way to RHP Jason Townsend (S, 8) for the top of the ninth. The 'Dads threatened with one on and two down, when Profar belted a fly ball to the right field wall, but Howard made a leaping catch against the fence to rob Profar of extra bases and close the 6-5 win for West Virginia.
