Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Hickory Crawdads 6-5 Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power victory snapped a seven game losing streak and avoided a second consecutive series sweep.
Hickory plated three runs in the first inning against West Virginia starter Jameson Taillon, but the Power answered with a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to trail 3-1 after one.
After the Crawdads extended the lead by a run in the top of the second, the Power captured the momentum with a three-run bottom of the second inning. Chase Lyles led off with a single. Rogelio Noris followed with a home run to left on a 2-2 pitch from Nick Tepesch. The long ball was the ninth of the season by Noris, matching Matt Curry for the team lead. With two outs, Andy Vasquez tripled and scored when Mel Rojas Jr. reached on an error to tie the game at four.
Hickory regained the lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning against Taillon, but West Virginia responded with a run in the bottom if the sixth when Justin Howard scored on a Lyles single.
In the bottom of the seventh, Andy Vasquez singled for his fourth hit of the game and the Power took advantage of a hit-and-run to take the lead 6-5. Vasquez attempted to steal second, and Rojas Jr. singled through the left side of the infield to score the runner from first.
Taillon pitched five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits in his tenth no decision over 14 starts. Rinku Singh (1-0), making his South Atlantic League debut, pitched three shutout innings in relief of the 2010 first round draft choice, allowing one hit and striking out two. Singh was one of the first athletes born in India to sign a contract with an American professional sports team back in 2008. Jason Townsend pitched the ninth fir his eighth save. The loss was charged to Crawdads' reliever Colby Killian (6-4).
West Virginia amassed 11 hits in the victory, the club's second of the month and first since a ten-inning win on July 6 at Lexington.
The Power continue this homestand on Saturday evening at Appalachian Power Park against the Charleston River Dogs. Tyler Waldron is slated to pitch for West Virginia against Charleston's Zack Nuding at 7:05 pm on Coal Miner Appreciation Night.
