Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Rome's pitching shut down the Kannapolis Intimidators over the final seven innings, as the Braves avoided a sweep with a 3-1 win at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Friday night. The Intimidators loss snaps a four-game win streak.
Robert Hefflinger broke a tie game in the top of the third with a two-run double, giving the Braves a 3-1 lead.
Chase Shreve relieved starter Ryan Weber in the fifth inning, and after allowing infield singles to the first two batters he faced, Shreve (3-4) retired 12 straight through four scoreless innings on the mound. In the ninth, Cody Martin tossed a 1-2-3 inning for a save (1) in his first appearance since joining Rome from Rookie-level Danville.
Weber allowed a run on four hits in four innings in a no decision.
Kannapolis reliever Wes Whisler entered the game in the fourth and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out two batters in the fifth. Whisler has not allowed a run in his last 7 2/3 innings with Kannapolis. Chris Bassitt made his second appearance for the Intimidators and struck out three batters over two scoreless innings of relief. Jake Wilson took the mound for the first time since July 9 and held the Braves off the board in the eighth and ninth.
Rome's Tony Mueller doubled to lead off the game and scored on a Steven Upchurch wild pitch. Kannapolis tied the game in the second inning when Juan Silverio doubled with two outs, and Drew Lee followed with a single to bring him home.
Upchurch (2-8) lasted three innings in a losing effort, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout in his shortest outing since June 11.
The Intimidators begin a three-game series against the defending SAL Champion Lakewood BlueClaws on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium. The game will be followed by a fireworks show, presented by Fairfield Inn. For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com.
