
Shorebirds Walk Off With 6-5 Win In 13 Innings

Salisbury, Md. - After giving up two runs in the ninth inning, the Delmarva Shorebirds (45-47, 10-12) recovered and walked off with a 6-5 win in 13 innings at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday night. By virtue of the win, the Shorebirds earned their first series win since beating Greensboro three games to win between June 27 and June 30.
It was the first extra inning game of the second half of the year.
The Shorebirds scored two first inning runs against starter Juan Gonzalez. Michael Mooney, who had three hits, singled and reached second on a throwing error by Gonzalez. After being sacrificed to third by Brenden Webb, Mooney scored on a double to left by Jeremy Nowak. Then, Gonzalez walked both Adam Gaylord and Michael Rooney to force in the second run.
Asheville tied the game in the sixth inning courtesy of RBIs by Kyle Parker and Corey Dickerson.
The Shorebirds responded with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Joe Oliveira hit a leadoff double to right-center field and scored on a bases loaded walk taken by Webb. In the eighth, Mikey Planeta sizzled a two-out RBI single into left-center field to score Rosa.
Trailing 4-2 in the ninth inning, the Tourists scored twice against closer David Walters. Joey Wong reached on an error by Garabez Rosa and scored later in the inning on a groundout to third by Brett Tanos. With two outs, Helder Velazquez hit a double off the left field wall to bring in Cristhian Adames to tie the game at 4-4.
The Tourists plated a run in the tenth inning to take their first lead. Wong hit an RBI double to score Chandler Laurent.
The Shorebirds answered in the bottom of the tenth. Down to their final out, Rosa lined a double to right field. Then, Joe Oliveira bounced a single up the middle to knot the game at 5-5.
In the 13th inning, Rosa hit a leadoff single. Oliveira then placed a sacrifice bunt to move Rosa to second. Planeta followed with a single through the left side of the infield to put the winning run at third. Then, Mooney placed a line drive right down the right field line to score Rosa.
Will Startup (2-0) earned the win by tossing the final three innings and holding the Tourists scoreless. He surrendered two hits and struck out four.
Shorebirds starter Jarret Martin retired 12 straight batters between the second and fifth innings and allowed just two runs over six innings. Randy Henry tossed two scoreless innings.
Travis Strong debuted for the Shorebirds in the top of the tenth and gave up one. He recorded two strikeouts.
The Shorebirds play game one against the Hickory Crawdads on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Cameron Roth is the scheduled starter for the âBirds.
