Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets extended their season-long winning streak to seven games, sweeping two from the Hagerstown Suns. The GreenJackets earned their third shutout win of the season in the opener by a 7-0 score while a bases-loaded walk to Josh Mazzola in the 11th inning allowed the GreenJackets to get a 3-2 walkoff win in the nightcap.

In the opener, the GreenJackets and Suns resumed a game suspended from Thursday night in the third inning. On Thursday, the Jackets picked up a 1-0 lead on Joel Weeks' RBI double in the second inning. When the game picked up on Friday, Weeks came through again in the fourth with a run-scoring single to put the GreenJackets up 2-0.

Adam Duvall tripled home a pair in the fifth inning, the key blow in a four-run frame for the GreenJackets. Mazzola's RBI double in the sixth pushed the lead to 7-0.

Ryan Bradley (1-1) walked one and struck out one in a scoreless 2.1 inning stint of no-hit baseball to get the win after taking the mound when play resumed. Thursday's Suns starter AJ Cole (2-5) took the loss, allowing a run on three hits in two innings while striking out five.

Augusta took an early lead in the nightcap on a Chris Lofton sacrifice fly in the third and Devin Harris's RBI groundout in the fourth to go up a pair. Gaspar Santiago was dominant on the mound through five no-hit innings, leaving due to a high pitch count. Santiago didn't allow a run or a hit, retiring 15 of the 16 men he faced with a walk serving as his only blemish. He struck out four Suns hitters.

Hagerstown tied things off reliever Seth Rosin in the sixth inning as Chris Curran's bunt single on the first pitch from Rosin broke up Augusta's no-hit bid. After another single and a walk loaded the bases with two outs, Wade Moore's two-run single to right field tied things at two and they stayed that way until extras.

The GreenJackets loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with one out, but couldn't push the go-ahead run across. Stranded baserunners became a reoccurring theme for Augusta, as the GreenJackets left 15 runners aboard in the nightcap. Hagerstown didn't have many chances late, managing just one hit after Moore's game-tying single and nothing until the 11th inning.

With two outs in the bottom of the 11th and Joel Weeks at second, Duvall was intentionally walked to allow Ryan Demmin to face Ryan Lollis. After Lollis drew an unintentional walk to load the bases, Demmin (0-1) also walked Josh Mazzola on a 3-2 pitch to allow the GreenJackets to win in walkoff fashion for the fifth time this season and move Augusta's record in extra innings to 6-4.

Justin Schumer (5-4) was the unsung hero for the GreenJackets, winning for the second straight time out of the bullpen. Schumer fired five scoreless, one-hit innings to get the victory. He walked one and struck out two - retiring 11 hitters in a row during one stretch.

The GreenJackets have now won seven in a row and nine of their last ten as they head into a three-game weekend series with the Savannah Sand Gnats that opens on Saturday. Shawn Sanford (6-3, 2.53) will head to the mound for the GreenJackets in the series opener. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 5:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
