Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Lakewood, N.J. - The Delmarva Shorebirds scratched across an eighth inning run to squeeze past the Lakewood BlueClaws 2-1 at FirstEnergy Park in game one on Monday night. The Shorebirds ended a three-game losing streak. The Shorebirds have won the series opener in five of their last six series.
The Shorebirds struck first in the fourth inning. John Ruettiger, the Orioles eighth round selection in 2011, walked to open the frame. Then, Brenden Webb drew his league best 69th walk of the season to put runners at first and second. Ty Kelly followed with a grounder to short that Edgar Duran fielded and fired into right field trying to start a double play, allowing Ruettiger to score from second.
In the fifth inning, the BlueClaws responded to tie the game. With one out, Jeff Lanning hit a double that one-hopped the left field wall. Then, Maikel Franco doubled off the top of the wall in left field to tie the game at 1-1.
The Shorebirds regained the lead in the eighth inning. Garabez Rosa hit a hard double down the left field line. Mike Mooney followed with a sacrifice bunt to advance Rosa to third. Then, with one out, Ruettiger hit a sacrifice fly RBI to shallow left field to plate Rosa.
Tim Berry tossed five stellar innings but did not factor into the decision. He allowed just four hits and one run. Berry also fanned four without issuing a walk.
Luis Noel entered in the sixth inning and allowed just one hit over three scoreless innings. Noel has not allowed an earned run in his last 15.1 innings pitched.
David Walters came on in the ninth inning and stranded the tying run at third to earn his 28th save. Walters now stands alone with the second most saves in single-season franchise history.
John Ruettiger went 0-for-2 with a run and an RBI in his debut with the Shorebirds.
The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 6:05 p.m. RHP Jake Cowan will start game one while RHP Mike Wright is scheduled for game two.
