Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON - Hickory lit the scoreboard for four runs in the seventh in a 4-1 comeback triumph over the Charleston RiverDogs in front of 2,508 fans in South Atlantic League at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Monday night.
With the victory, Hickory broke a four-game skid in improving to 27-23, 67-51 overall, while Charleston saw its three-game win streak go by the wayside in dropping to 22-28, 48-72 overall.
Charleston's Shane Greene and Hickory's Cody Buckel engaged in a memorable pitcher's duel through 5.0 innings, before both were lifted. Greene allowed five hits with three walks and six strikeouts. The 6'4 Florida native stranded seven Crawdads working in and out of trouble in each inning. Buckel permitted five Dogs hits in his 5.0 stanzas, issuing one walk while striking out nine, including six of seven hitters between the third and fifth innings.
The RiverDogs got the ball rolling in the sixth against Crawdads reliever Ben Rowen, courtesy of a Kevin Mahoney single and a Kelvin De Leon double to leadoff the inning. Kyle Higashioka followed with a slower tapper groundout to first against a drawn-in infield that scored Mahoney for a 1-0 Charleston advantage.
Hickory, though, found its rhythm against Tommy Kahnle (2-5) in the seventh, scoring four times for a 4-1 lead. Jake Skole hit a RBI double to tie the game, while Odubel Herrera hit the next Kahnle offering to the right-field wall for a two-run two bagger. The last tally of the inning scored, Alejandro Selen legged out a two-out infield single to score Herrera, who reached third on a Charleston error.
Jose Monegro (1-0) tossed 2.0 scoreless relief innings for Hickory in his SAL debut, while Francisco Mendoza pitched a flawless ninth for his second save.
Game three, set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., features Charleston right-hander Mike Gipson (0-0, 3.60 ERA) facing off against Hickory right-hander Ben Henry (4-2, 2.66 ERA)
