Shorebirds down Suns

Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Hagerstown, MD.- The Shorebirds continued their winning ways in Hagerstown on Thursday night, improving to 7-0 at Municipal Stadium on the season with an 11-5 thrashing of the Suns. Delmarva led 3-2 until Joe Nowicki's fifth inning grand slam launched the Birds to a 7-2 lead. When all was said and done in the fifth, Delmarva scored six times and led the Suns 9-2. It did not take long for the Shorebirds to jump in front, as leadoff man Matt Angle took Hagerstown starter Josh Smoker deep in the first at bat of the game. The solo home run, Angle's second of the season, set the tone for a 13-hit evening. Angle was not done offensively after the first, as the center-fielder finished 3-5 with three runs scored.

The scoring onslaught was more than enough support for starter Sean Gleason, who earned his fifth win of the season with five and two thirds strong innings. Gleason allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) before giving way to Shane Mathews in the sixth inning. Hagerstown had runners on base in eight of the nine innings but stranded 12 on base on the evening. Washington Nationals right-fielder Austin Kearns, making a rehab start with the Suns as the designated hitter, was 0-2 with a walk, striking out in the first and flying to right in the third off Gleason. With the victory, the Birds match a season-high at nine games over the .500 mark. Delmarva seeks their fifth straight win tomorrow night behind the right arm of Luis Noel, who is 7-2 on the season.
