Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 6-2) completed the three game series sweep of the Greenville Drive (40-30, 3-5) Thursday night with an 8-0 win. Starter Daryl Maday worked seven shutout innings in the win and Augusta scored the only run it needed in the first inning without the benefit of a hit.
Shane Jordan led off the first inning being hit by a pitch then advanced to second base on the one-out walk to Garrett Baker. Angel Villalona then hit a ball to third base that Oscar Tejeda could not handle allowing Jordan to score for a 1-0 Augusta lead.
Maday (6-4) allowed just three hits, one walk and struck out four in the win.
Wilmin Rodriguez worked the final two shutout innings for Augusta allowing one hit, a walk and a strikeout.
The GreenJackets were held without a hit over the first four innings but then plated eight runs on nine hits over the fifth and sixth innings.
Two runs scored in the fifth inning with one coming when Jordan hit into a double-play with the bases loaded. Nick Noonan followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 Augusta lead.
In the sixth inning Augusta plated five runs on five hits for an 8-0 lead. Andrew Davis connected for an RBI double then Nestor Rojas and Charlie Culberson followed with back-to-back RBI singles. James Simmons brought home another run on an RBI single then Jordan capped off the scoring with an RBI single.
Greenville starter Chad Povich (5-2) recorded the loss allowing six runs, four earned on six hits over five innings.
The GreenJackets begin a five game road trip in Hickory, NC Friday night against the Crawdads. Augusta will send lefty Madison Bumgarner (7-2, 1.77) to the hill in the opener. Hickory counters with right-hander Rafael De Los Santos (2-6, 5.13). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
Game Notes:
The GreenJackets improved to a season high 17 games over the .500 mark.
Augusta recorded its sixth shutout of the season.
The GreenJackets finished 6-2 on their eight game home stand.
Charlie Culberson had the only multi-hit game for Augusta finishing 2-for-4.
Augusta recorded its fifth sweep of the season.
