RiverDogs' Montero Named to MLB All-Star Futures Game
June 26, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston RiverDogs catcher Jesus Montero has been named to the 10th annual MLB All-Star Futures Game to take place on July 18th at Yankee Stadium, which will also host the 2008 MLB All-Star Game in the historic facility's last season of existence.
Montero is the first RiverDog to receive this invitation since outfielder Jose Tabata competed in the 2006 Futures Game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pa.
"It's a really big honor to be part of the Futures Game, especially from this level at his (Montero's) age" said RiverDogs manager Torre Tyson. "He's obviously earned a lot of respect throughout Minor League Baseball at an early stage in his career."
The No. 6 overall prospect in the Yankees organization, according to Baseball America, has established himself as one of the premier sluggers in the South Atlantic League (SAL) and competed in the 2008 SAL All-Star Game at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C.
As of June 26, Montero is hitting for an impressive .309 average with a team-high seven home runs, 48 RBI and 45 runs scored. The 18-year old Venezuelan has also put together three separate double-digit hitting streaks, which includes an 11-game streak from April 7-18.
The Futures Game is a showcase for highly-touted minor league talent and has been held each season since 1999 as part of the MLB's All-Star Weekend festivities. Rosters for the Futures Game are selected by Baseball America, in conjunction with MLB and the 30 clubs. Every organization is represented, with no more than two players from any organization and 25 players per team, divided into U.S. and World teams based on place of birth.
Past MVP's of the Futures Game include Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs, Jose Reyes of the New York Mets and Grady Sizemore of the Cleveland Indians.
