MANCHESTER, NH - Nick Shore scored two goals as the Monarchs beat the Norfolk 5-2 on Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
The Monarchs (14-5-1-1) took the first game of a back-to-back series with the Admirals (9-14-0-0), maintaining a tie for first place in the Atlantic Division.
"I thought the effort was terrific," Head Coach Mike Stothers said. "I thought everybody was excellent from the goalie on out. J.F. had to work hard. He made some unbelievable saves for us. I thought our defense was excellent at moving the puck."
Jordan Weal started the scoring early on a pass from Zach O'Brien at 4:05 in the first period. Justin Auger's forecheck caused a turnover in the Admirals zone, leading to the one-timer that beat Yann Danis high blocker.
The Monarchs added to their lead at 7:13 in the second period when Nick Shore scored his 11th goal of the season. Andy Andreoff, playing his first game on a conditioning assignment, started a 2-on-1 rush, and sent a pass that Shore tipped through the legs of Danis.
Michael Mersch made the score 3-0 at 2:08 in the third period. Mersch took a quick pass from Nic Dowd on the doorstep, and stuffed the puck past Danis.
The Admirals cut into the Manchester lead on a goal by Matt Bailey at 5:14 in the third. Bailey was camped out in front of J.F. Berube's goal, and nudged the puck in after multiple saves by the Manchester goalie.
O'Brien pushed the lead back to three when he found a loose puck on his backhand, and lifted a top-shelf tally at 11:33 in the third.
Shore ended the Manchester scoring at 14:02, finishing another 2-on-1 breakaway for his second goal of the night. Brian O'Neill led the scoring chance, holding the puck long enough find a wide open Shore who made no mistake on the shot.
Charles Sarault scored at 14:49 in the third to make it 5-2.
The Monarchs and Admirals close out their season series with a 3 p.m. game tomorrow. Manchester fans can donate new, unwrapped toys for families in need this holiday season at the Toys for Tots Drive.

* The Monarchs are 13-0-0-0 when leading after two periods this season.
* Manchester has not lost this season when scoring five or more goals (6-0-0-0). * Tonight's win extended the Monarchs winning streak at home to five straight games beginning on Nov. 8.
