Portland Pirates News Release
Saco, ME - The Portland Pirates today announced that they have signed forward Francis Wathier to a one-year American Hockey League Standard Player Contract. The deal will allow Wathier to complete the season with the Pirates.
The 6-foot-4, 210 pound center from St. Isidore, Ontario joined the Pirates on a Professional Tryout Contract on October 21. Since then, the 29 year-old has skated in 14 games for Portland, registering two assists, two points, six penalty minutes, and a plus-1 rating.
Wathier is in his tenth professional season. He spent the bulk of his first nine seasons in the Dallas Stars system. Most of that time was spent with their top AHL affiliate, the Iowa Stars from 2005-08, the Iowa Chops from 2008-09, and the Texas Stars from 2009 until midway through last season. He has also played for the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads and AHL's Milwaukee Admirals. Wathier has played 10 NHL games, all with Dallas.
Wathier has played a total of 550 professional games and scored 95 goals, 116 assists, and 211 points. He was originally a Dallas Sixth Round NHL Entry Draft selection in 2003. Prior to turning pro, Wathier played for the Hull and Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL between 2001 and 2005. He won two President's Cup championships with the team in 2003 and 2004.
The Pirates are on the road for the next days, playing at Albany against the Devils today at 5:00 and at Providence against the Bruins tomorrow at 3:05. Catch all the action on the WPEI Portland Pirates Radio Network with the Voice of the Pirates, Jeff Mannix.
