Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
SHREVEPORT, LA - Scott Shaw threw the first complete game shutout for the RailCats in over a year as the righty blanked Shreveport-Bossier 9-0 on Saturday night.
Shaw posted a career best and RailCat season high 11 strikeouts in the win, punctuating the shutout by fanning Shreveport-Bossier's Palmer Karr, Jr. for the third time to end the contest with runners at second and third. The right-hander allowed just three batters to reach second base, and uncorked 127 pitches in the victory, walking just one and allowing three hits. The opening night starter, who faced just four over the minimum, retired the first five batters of the game before allowing a single in the second and then retired nine straight before an Uriak Marquez single in the fifth. Shaw responded by retiring the next 11 batters before a leadoff single in the ninth. The native of Gurnee, Illinois tossed the first complete game shutout since Willie Glen blanked Fargo-Moorhead in North Dakota on June 26, 2010.
For the first time since July 7, the RailCats failed to score a first inning runs as Shreveport-Bossier starter Ryan DiPietro sat down the âCats in order in the first. DiPietro retired the first seven batters of the game before Brian Kolb and Chris Carrara collected back-to-back singles in the top of the third. With two outs Mike Massaro stroked a double to center to drive home both runners and hand the RailCats a 2-0 lead which was more than enough for Shaw.
The RailCats extended the lead in the third. Cristian Guerrero led off with a single and was replaced by Mike Valadez on a fielder's choice. Kyle Haines rocketed a double to left moving Valadez to third, and Mike Rohde lifted a sacrifice fly to left, plating Valadez with the third run.
Six more runs crossed the plate on five hits in the top of the seventh as the RailCats chased DiPietro from the game. Kolb opened the inning with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a successful squeeze from Lorenzo Scott, who reached with a single on the play. Scott swiped second and trotted home on a single from Massaro. Reliever Lee Henry entered for the Captains with two outs and was immediately greeted by a double from Guerrero to score Massaro. Guerrero scored on an error before Rohde finished the frame by striking a two-run double down the first base line.
Eight of the nine batters in the lineup recorded a hit as the RailCats amassed 14 for the second consecutive night. The âCats smashed seven doubles, a single game high for this year. Massaro and Haines each posted two doubles. Massaro registered three hits in the game and finished with three RBIs. Rohde also plated three runs.
The series concludes tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. RHP Jack Frawley (2-4, 6.30), who threw eight shutout innings against Winnipeg at U. S. Steel Yard on June 4, starts for the RailCats with LHP Joel Kirsten (3-6, 8.25) countering for the Captains as the RailCats aim for the sweep.
