Fish hunt down Pheasants for second straight night

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

One of the Winnipeg Goldeyes hottest hitters said last night that fans shouldn't expect this current offensive explosion to last forever.

"But we'll go with it as long as we can," said Brian Myrow. "Right now this is a little ridiculous. Don't expect 18, 19, 20 hits to happen every night. But it is fun to play well."

For the second straight night the Goldeyes absolutely blew up the pitching staff of the Sioux Falls Pheasants. After winning 18-1 on 20 hits on Friday night, the Goldeyes pounded out 20 more hits on Saturday night, scored seven runs in the first inning and blasted the Pheasants 19-5 in front of 5,688 spectators at Shaw Park.

This was a rout early as the Goldeyes put up seven in the first, three in the second, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and five in the sixth to cruise to their 38th win of the year against only 22 losses and remain in first place in the American Association's North Division.

The Goldeyes have won 22 of their last 30 games and are 11-4 in the month of July. They are 7-1 since last Sunday's win in Fargo.

"We hit the ball very well when we force the pitcher to throw strikes," said Myrow. "We're hitting better now because guys are having better at bats. They're not swinging at the first ball that moves or the first fastball they see. They're being patient at the plate and forcing the opposing pitcher to throw more pitches.

"They say hitting is contagious, but I think it's more a matter of hitting well because people around you are hitting well. When there is a runner at third and one out there is less pressure to get a hit. You can hit a sacrifice fly and drive in a run and how many times, with no pressure, does that turn into a double?

"We're just more comfortable hitting with one or two strikes. And it's getting warmer. The ball is carrying real well. But don't expect 15 and 18 hits to be a regular occurrence."

Friday night was a great night to pad statistics. The only Goldeyes' starter not to get an RBI was No. 9 hitter Brian Joynt, who did score two runs.

Starter Mike Williams (2-2, 5.56 ERA), got the win for the Goldeyes while Brandon Rapoza (2-9, 5.99) suffered the loss. Ian Thomas came in for Winnipeg and allowed one run three hits over three complete innings of work. It was the first run Thomas had allowed in his previous 18.2 innings. In fact, he had not allowed a run since June 14 against these same Sioux Falls Pheasants. During that stretch, he had 25 strikeouts.

The finale of this four-game series goes Sunday afternoon at Shaw Park at 1:30 p.m. and can be heard live with Paul Edmonds, on Sports Radio 1290 and can be seen live nationally on Shaw TV with Scott Taylor and Jim Toth.
