Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La.---Shreveport-Bossier was shutout for the fourth time in six games as Gary SouthShore's Scott Shaw (7-3) threw a three-hit shutout and the RailCats blanked the Captains 9-0 at Fair Grounds Field Saturday night. Shaw struck out a season-high 11 and walked one. The Captains lost their fourth straight and have dropped ten of 12 games.
The shutout marked the fourth time in a week Shreveport-Bossier has been blanked, after not having been held scoreless all year up to this point.
Captains starter Ryan DiPietro (8-3) pitched 6.2 innings, allowing six runs on ten hits and lost for the first time since June 20. He departed with two out and a man on in the seventh inning with the score 5-0. But the RailCats would break the game open with four more after DePietro left the game, scoring three unearned runs off reliever Lee Henry in the frame.
Gary SouthShore got on the board in the top of the third when shortstop Brian Kolb and third baseman Chris Carrara singled with one out. Center fielder Mike Massaro knocked them in with a double to make it 2-0. The RailCats made it 3-0 in the fourth on a sac fly by first baseman Mike Rohde, scoring catcher Mike Valadez.
In the seventh, Kolb led off with a double and scored on Lorenzo Scott's RBI base hit. Massaro would single home Scott to make it 5-0. With two outs and Henry on to pitch, right fielder Christian Guerrero hit an RBI double. Henry would walk Valadez before Kyle Haines reached on an error to Captains third baseman Joe Urtuzuastegui, scoring Guerrero and keeping the inning alive. After Rohdge hit a two-run double to make it 9-0, Henry was lifted for Jameson Maj who would get the third out and then throw a scoreless eighth inning.
Andres Rodriguez, Uriak Marquez and Alex Cowart had the only base hits of the night off Shaw, who had stretches where he retired nine and 11 in a row. The Captains didn't put two men on base until the ninth when Bryan Sabatella drew a two-out walk with Cowart on at first on an infield single. But Shaw would strike out Palmer Karr Jr. for the final out to preserve the shutout.
Massaro went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. He now has 5 RBIs in the series. Rohde also had three runs batted in, while Kolb went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The RailCats had seven extra-base hits on the night, all doubles.
