Winnipeg hits Pheasants hard again to take series lead

WINNIPEG, Manitoba. - The Winnipeg Goldeyes rolled to a 19-5 defeat of the Sioux Falls Pheasants on Saturday night in Winnipeg, grabbing a 2-1 series lead in the four-game set.

The series has not been short of offense. The Goldeyes plated 18 men in game two, while the Pheasants scored 17 in the opener. The two teams have combined for 65 runs in the series.

The Pheasants scratched out the first run when Reggie Abercrombie's double play ground ball in the first brought home Joe Anthonsen. But Winnipeg responded with seven runs in the bottom half for a commanding 7-1 lead. Brian Myrow tripled in the first two runs on his way to a three-hit, three-RBI performance. Myrow has scorched the Pheasants at .395 pace this season along with three home runs and 10 RBI in 10 games.

The Goldeyes scored in all but two innings, including a three-run home run from Justin Bass in the second and a grand slam from Wes Long in the sixth. Long went 2-for-5 with 5 RBI. The Pheasants did knock out 14 hits, but they left 11 men stranded. Joe Anthonsen, Kevin Carby and Trevor Lawhorn each had three hits. Hunter Jobes swatted his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot in the fifth inning.

Mike Williams (2-2) earned the victory for Winnipeg with five innings tossed, allowing four runs and 10 hits.

Brandon Rapoza (2-9) suffered the loss for the Pheasants in his toughest outing of the year. He gave up 13 runs and 13 hits in 4 1/3 innings.
