Worcester Sharks News Release
WORCESTER, MA - Dan DaSilva scored the game winner in the 6th round of the shootout as the Sharks held on to defeat the Connecticut Whale 2-1 Wednesday night at the DCU Center. The shootout win was the Sharks first in four tries this season.
Kevin Henderson scored for Worcester and Alex Stalock made 22 saves as the Sharks overcame a late third period goal by Connecticut. The Sharks improved to 9-0-0-0 when scoring the first goal of the hockey game.
The first ever road period for the Connecticut Whale (formerly the Hartford Wolf Pack) did not start with a bang. The Sharks suppressed any consistent offensive pressure from Connecticut, and killed off two first period power plays. The Sharks turned their good defensive play into an offensive rush. Cory Quirk sent Kevin Henderson and Dan DaSilva on a two-on-one which saw Henderson's shot find its way past Whale goalie Chad Johnson. The goal was Kevin Henderson's 2nd of the season. The period ended with Worcester on a late power play that carried over into the second period. The score at the end of twenty minutes was 1-0 in favor of the Sharks with shots tied 7-7.
Both teams turned up the defensive play in the second period as neither team was able to create much offense. The best scoring chance of the period was a breakaway shorthanded chance by Chad Kolarik that rang off the post behind goalie Alex Stalock. Both teams failed to convert on power play chances in the period which ended with Joe Loprieno getting into a scrap at the buzzer with Whale forward Jared Nightingale. Shots in the period were 7-5 in favor of Connecticut with the score remaining 1-0 Sharks.
The majority of the third period was the same defensive battle as the previous forty minutes. But with Worcester failing to net an insurance goal, it left the door open for Connecticut and with less than five minutes remaining they would take advantage. Whale defenseman Tomas Kundratek (2nd) scored to tie the game at 1-1 after his 55 foot shot through traffic found the back of the net. Regulation would end tied at 1-1 with shots in the period in favor of Connecticut 9-5.
The game went to overtime and once again Worcester failed to take advantage of a late power play. The Sharks went on a 4-on-3 man advantage with 1:08 remaining but failed to record a shot as the game went to a shootout. Forwards Jonathan Cheechoo and Dan DaSilva would score, with DaSilva getting the game winner in the 6th round as the Sharks outlasted the Whale for a 2-1 win.
The Sharks record improves to 11-7-1-3 with 26 points through 22 games and 6-4-1-1 at the DCU Center.
