San Antonio Rampage News Release

Worcester, MA - The San Antonio Rampage started off the annual Rodeo road trip with a 5-1 loss to the Worcester Sharks Saturday night, ending a franchise-record five game road winning streak in the process, in front of 5,803 fans at the DCU Center.

Coming off back-to-back games in San Antonio, the Rampage had to fly halfway across the country Saturday to take on the Sharks, and the brutal travel schedule seemed to take its toll. The Rampage came out flat, as they were outshot 17-7 in the first period, resulting in an early 3-0 Sharks' lead. The last of the three goals was scored by Michael Desjardins at the 19:59 mark of the opening period after he collected a rebound off the pads of Rampage goaltender Al Montoya. There was controversy following the goal however, as it was unclear if the puck had crossed the line before the buzzer had sounded, but after review, the goal would stand. The Sharks' lead would grow to 4-0 when the Rampage gave up their league leading 10th short-handed goal of the season, tying the Sharks in that category, as Steven Zalewski tallied his tenth goal of the season. The Rampage would break through late in the period with a five-on-three power play goal at the 19:36 mark, as Wyatt Smith hammered home his 13th goal of the season, with assists going to Chad Kolarik and David Spina. Early in the third period it seemed the Rampage had cut the Sharks' lead to 4-2, as AHL All Star Brett MacLean directed a Kolarik shot just under the crossbar during their seventh power play of the game. The goal was disallowed however after the referees convened and concluded that the goal had deflected off the stick while it was above the crossbar. The Sharks added a late insurance goal as Cory Larose added his second goal of the night when Rampage coach Greg Ireland pulled Montoya with just 1:17 left in the third. The Rampage collected only one goal on nine power play opportunities, and were outshot 33 to 25, though the bulk of the damage was done in the final ten minutes of the first period. The Rampage will play their second game of a season-long 13 games in 25 days road trip on Wednesday as they travel to Binghamton to take on the Senators at 6:05 pm.
