Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, NY - Looking to end the month of January on a high note, the Syracuse Crunch instead were defeated by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight, 4-1, in front of a sellout crowd of 6,281 fans at the War Memorial at Oncenter.

Although outshot 15-7 in the first 20 minutes, the Crunch notched the game's first goal with two and a half minutes remaining in the frame and with one second remaining on the power play.

Craig MacDonald turned around, found the puck and rifled a shot from the slot. The puck hit off a Penguins defender and came right to the stick of Steve Kelly camped out in front of the net. Kelly's second whack found the back of the net behind John Curry to put the Crunch up 1-0.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tied the game just under nine minutes into the second stanza when Tommy Goebel spun away from Andrey Plekhanov behind the net and found Tim Wallace in front, who deposited the biscuit past Dan LaCosta to tie the game at 1-1.

Wallace struck again for his second of the game and seventh of the season at the 18:14 mark when he broke in on a 2-on-1, faked to his backhand and beat LaCosta up high to give Wilkes-Barre/Scranton the 2-1 advantage.

The Penguins kept their momentum going and went up 3-1 just 18 seconds later when Deryk Engelland took a feed from Luca Caputi and beat Lacosta with a wrister low to the stick side from the top of the right circle.

Through two periods, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton held a 30-14 shots advantage.

The Crunch only mustered another eight shots in the third period, as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton put a defensive choke hold on the Syracuse offense.

Luca Caputi added his 13th goal of the campaign with two minutes left in regulation to cap a 4-1 Penguins win.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton outshot the Crunch 40-22.
