Houston Aeros News Release
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Chicago Wolves snapped the Houston Aeros' five-game winning streak over the club with a 3-0 shutout at Allstate Arena Saturday night. The Aeros (22-20-1-7) took the first two meetings of the season before dropping Saturday's contest, allowing Chicago within one point in the West Division standings. The Aeros will start a three-in-three in Iowa on Friday, travel through Quad City Saturday and finish in Chicago Sunday for the second in three straight weekends the club plays the Wolves.
Chicago got on the board first with Riley Holzapfel netting a power-play marker on their first man-advantage of the contest. Grant Lewis and Jamie Rivers earned assists on the eventual game-winning goal that came at 15:14 in the opening period. Houston's net-minder Nolan Schaefer, who stopped 18-of-20 shots on the night, got his second start in as many nights and knocked aside 10-of-11 shots on net in the first period. Matt Kassian and Mike Hoffman dropped the gloves twice in the period, the first time only 1:18 into the game and the second on the faceoff immediately after the lone goal.
Joey Crabb gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead on their second power-play opportunity of the second period with Rivers and Lewis earning assists on the goal. Only five penalties were called in the middle frame compared to the nine called in the first period.
Houston more than doubled their number of shots on net with a season-high 17 during the third period against Chicago goaltender Brent Krahn, who stopped all 30 shots faced in the contest. Down 2-0, Houston pulled Schaefer in favor of an extra attacker with nearly five minutes left on the clock. The Aeros continued to test Krahn with a number of good chances including two minutes of a six-on-four when Brett Sterling was sent to the penalty box. Arturs Kulda netted his first goal of the season when he launched the puck from his defensive faceoff circle towards Houston's empty net and in with 1:07 remaining in the contest for Chicago's 3-0 victory.
