Sharks Continue to Battle in the Atlantic

Rewind the Tape:

1.18.08 - Worcester 3 - Portland 4 - Shootout - DCU Center

The Sharks trailed 3-1 heading into the third period before Mike Iggulden scored two third period goals to force overtime. The Pirates won the game in the seventh round of the Shootout to defeat the Sharks, 4-3. Mike Iggulden scored the only two goals in the shootout for Worcester. Taylor Dakers made 22 saves in net. The Sharks PK unit stopped all eight power play chances for the Pirates. Lukas Kaspar scored his 12th of the season just 54 seconds into the contest.

1.19.08 - Worcester 3 -Providence 4 - DCU Center

Despite a quick start and an early lead, the Sharks were unable to snap a three-game losing skid, falling to the Providence Bruins at the DCU Center, 4-3, on Saturday night. Tom Cavanagh scored a goal 8:27 into the game, but the Bruins stormed back with four of the next five tallies. Ashton Rome cut the Bruins' lead to 4-3 in the third period, picking the top right corner of the goal over Jordan Sigalet, but the Sharks were unable to score the equalizer. Dimitri Patzold stopped 36 of 40 shots in goal for the Sharks.

Sharks in the Atlantic...

The Sharks (17-16-3-3) swim in sixth place with 40 points in the Atlantic Division, four points behind Manchester for fifth and six points behind the Falcons for the fourth and final playoff spot. The Sharks have played an AHL low 39 games, which is four less than Manchester and five less than Springfield. The Sharks trail the Providence Bruins by 29 points for the top spot in the Atlantic.

Sharks Bites:

* F Mike Iggulden is tops on the team with 17 goals, 22 assists, 39 points, and 100 shots, and will represent the Sharks in the 2008 AHL-All Star Classic in Binghamton, NY later this month.

* After recording first goals in both games last weekend against Portland and Providence, the Sharks have now lit the lamp first in 11 of the last 13 contests dating back to 12/22.

*The Sharks penalty killing unit has turned it up of late. They haven't allowed a power play goal in the last five games, killing off all 21 opponent power plays in that span.

*With his goal on Friday, Lukas Kaspar extended his goal-scoring streak to three games (1/12-18). He did not score on Saturday, snapping the streak.

*Graham Mink recorded an assist in both games last weekend in his return from an injury.

Roster Moves:

The San Jose Sharks recalled forward Devin Setoguchi on Friday, January 18. Setoguchi turned it up toward the end of his stint with Worcester, recording 9 points (1g, 8a) in his final seven games. Also, San Jose called up Tomas Plihal on Sunday, January 20. Plihal picked up a first period goal in his final game with Worcester on Saturday.

Worcester to host the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic!

American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced that the Worcester Sharks and the city of Worcester have been awarded the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic. The event will take place at the DCU Center in January, 2009. The 2009 event in Worcester will mark the fourth time since it was revived in 1995 that the AHL All-Star Classic will take place in New England. The AHL All-Star Game was last held in Massachusetts in 1959 at the Eastern States Coliseum in West Springfield.

Coming Up:

In hopes of improving playoff positioning, the Sharks have four crucial road games starting with a 7:05 game in Springfield on Monday. They then travel to Manchester on Wednesday, Hartford on Friday, and back to Springfield on Saturday. Worcester, Manchester, and Springfield are battling for the fourth and final Atlantic Division playoff spot.

After another road game at Philadelphia, the Sharks return to the DCU Center to face the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday, February 2 at 7:05 p.m. with the first 3,000 fans in attendance receiving a hand-signed Graham Mink Collector's Card. Fans are encouraged to come to the arena early, as Saint John's and Saint Peter-Marian will square off in the First Annual High School Hockey Classic with a 4:00 p.m. contest prior to the Sharks vs. the Monarchs.
