Worcester Sharks News Release

HARTFORD, CT -The Sharks fell 4-3 to the Whale in the shootout in a game that featured 138 penalty minutes on Saturday night at the XL Center.

T.J. Trevelyan, Jonathan Cheechoo, and James Marcou scored for Worcester and Alex Stalock made 43 saves in the fight filled contest. A full 5-on-5 brawl at 18:23 of the 2nd period led to four ejections and a lengthy delay as the Sharks couldn't hold on to three separate leads.

The start of the game was delayed for ten minutes because the Sharks bus broke down on the Mass Pike on the way to Hartford. T.J. Trevelyan (3rd) gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead with a terrific forehand to backhand move on top of the crease past Chad Johnson at 9:25. Trevelyan was set up in front after a nice entry into the Whale zone by Steve Zalewski and a quick pass through the Whale defense onto the stick of Trevelyan. Each team went 0-for-1 on the power play in the opening period as the Sharks held a 14-7 shot advantage through twenty minutes of play and a 1-0 lead.

A wild brawl at the end of the 2nd period led to 92 minutes in penalties and led to the Sharks go-ahead goal by James Marcou (4th) on the power play at 18:32.

Connecticut tied the score at 1-1 as Brodie Dupont (3rd) got a stick on a centering feed through the crease at 2:58 of the 2nd period on the power play. The Sharks retook the lead at 10:02 with a power play goal of their own by Jonathan Cheechoo (8th), after James Marcou centered the puck to the crease and Cheechoo deflected the puck home. Just 58 seconds later, the Whale tied the score at 2-2 when Mats Zuccarello (10th) fired the puck past Alex Stalock. After the goal, Andrew Desjardins squared off with Brodie Dupont and Nick Petrecki fought Kris Newbury, with all four combatants receiving major penalties for fighting. Desjardins knocked down Dupont and Brodie did not return after. After Desjardins served his major penalty, three Hartford Whale players (Soryal, Nightingale, and DiDiomete) went after him and a wild 5-on-5 brawl ensued. Three Hartford players were ejected along with Kevin Henderson at 18:23. James Marcou (4th) broke a 16 game goalless drought with a power play goal just nine seconds later as the Sharks led 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.

Justin Williams (10th) scored the only goal of the third period at 10:08 to tie the score at 3-3 and force over time. The Sharks had a power play in the extra session but could not convert as the game went to the shootout.

Mats Zuccarello and Jeremy Williams scored for the Whale in the shootout while T.J. Trevelyan scored for the Sharks as Connecticut took the 4-3 shootout victory.

The Sharks record dips to 11-7-1-4 with 27 points through 23 games and 5-3-0-3 on the road this season.
