Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose offence was shutdown by the Oklahoma City Barons on Saturday night in front of 8,506 fans. The Moose fired 37 shots on Barons netminder Martin Gerber, but were unable to capitalize on their chances, going 0-for-7 on the powerplay. Moose goaltender Eddie Lack made 30 stops in the loss.
Tommy Maxwell was called for hooking at 6:14, putting the Moose shorthanded for the first time in the game. The Barons were unable to get much going on the powerplay, registering only a single shot against the Manitoba penalty killers.
Soon after the Moose killed Maxwell's penalty, Jordan Bendfield was sent to the box for interference at 8:54, giving the Moose their first man-advantage of the game. Four seconds later, Barons defenceman Taylor Chorney was caught slashing, sending the Moose to an extended five-on-three. Unfortunately Manitoba was unable to capitalize on the powerplay, registering seven shots, but Oklahoma City goaltender Martin Gerber was able to stop each one.
With five minutes left in the first period Barons forward Ben Ondrus dropped the gloves with Moose defenceman Ryan Parent. The wrestled briefly before being sent to the box, five minutes each for fighting.
5:10 into the second period Moose left-winger Shawn Weller was sent to the penalty box for tripping, giving the Barons their second powerplay of the game. Manitoba continued their penalty-killing prowess, not allowing a single Barons shot on net.
The first goal of the game was scored at 8:06 into the second period when Oklahoma City left-winger Matt Marquardt fired the puck from the point past a screened Eddie Lack, setting the Barons ahead 1-0.
The Barons scored their second goal of the game at 17:38 into the second period when the puck was deflected onto the stick of Oklahoma City centre Ryan O'Marra who was waiting the slot. O'Marra fired the puck just past the outstretched leg of Moose goaltender Eddie Lack giving the Barons a 2-0 edge.
Manitoba was provided with every opportunity early in the third. 2:18 into the period the Moose were given a man-advantage as Barons defenceman Shawn Belle was sent to the sin bin for holding. At 5:52 Barons centreman Milan Kytnar was sent away from Interference, and was soon followed by forward Linus Omark at 6:31, who was serving a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Oklahoma City net was transformed into a shooting gallery as the Moose fired a number of shots on net, but despite all the chances, Manitoba was unable to solve goaltender Martin Gerber.
At 13:58 into the third frame Linus Omark picked the puck past the Moose defender in the neutral zone, skating in on Eddie Lack all alone Omark was able to flip the puck over the Moose netminder for the Barons' third tally of the game.
With Ryan Parent serving time for a high-stick Alexandre Giroux took the puck from behind the Moose net and was able to wrap it around, behind Manitoba goaltender Eddie Lack at 16:51 in the third period.
The match finished with the Oklahoma City Barons taking a 4-0 victory over the Manitoba Moose.
The Moose head on the road starting Tuesday night as they face the Texas Stars. Game time is 7:30 pm CST. Listen to the game live on CJOB 68 with Brian Munz.
