Seven Salem Errors Hand Keys Fourth Straight Win

Salem, Va. -The Salem Red Sox committed a season-high seven errors, which helped the Frederick Keys battle back from a four-run deficit to post a 9-7 win on Wednesday night at LewisGale Field. In the game, the Salem committed two errors in three different innings, resulting in five unearned runs. It equaled the Keys largest come-from-behind win of the year, and extended the club's winning streak to four games.

Trailing by three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the visitors broke through against Kyle Kraus. Wynston Sawyer reached on an error by shortstop Mauricio Duban to open the stanza, and scored one batter later on a double to right by Conor Bierfeldt. A bounce out by Anthony Caronia moved Bierfeldt to third, while a single by Jay Gonzalez pulled the Keys within a run. Two batters later, Tanner Witt tied the game after Josh Hart singled Gonzalez to third.

With the frame still alive, Chance Sisco put the Keys back on top after a long battle with Kraus (1-1). Going nine pitches against the righty, Sisco flipped a single to shallow center to make it 8-7. In the ninth, the Keys added an additional marker, thanks to an error by Yoilan Cerse at third, a single by Sawyer, and a throwing error by catcher Danny Bethea on a pitch in the dirt with two runners trying to advance.

Garrett Cortright worked two scoreless innings to pick up his first Carolina League save. In the ninth he retired all three batters he faced, Frederick's lone 1-2-3 inning of the night.

Salem did a majority of its damage in the fourth, scoring five times and sending 10 to bat against Keys starter Luis Gonzalez. Trailing 1-0 after an RBI single by Caronia in the second, the Red Sox opened its big inning with four straight singles, with the third by Bethea plating two runs. Following a sac-bunt, Duban added an RBI single, while Wendell Rijo collected a sacrifice fly on a ball dropped by Bierfeldt in right. Forrestt Allday completed the scoring with a second sac fly.

Salem scored twice in the seventh, thanks to a double by Cole Sturgeon and an RBI single by Zach Kapstein, while Rijo drove the later home with a single. The 19-year-old finished the game with a season-high four hits. He went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Despite allowing a pair of runs in the seventh, Jimmy Yacabonis (3-3) earned the win, he allowed four hits in the seventh. Kraus gave up only one earned run, but took the loss, allowing five to score on six hits. Frederick arms equaled their season-high with 18 hits allowed, but the Sox left 15 aboard for the game, also tying the most by an opponent this year.

The Keys try for a three-game sweep of the Red Sox on Thursday night. Left-hander Mitch Horacek (6-12, 4.45) gets the ball for the Keys and will be opposed by right-hander Kevin McAvoy (6-9, 4.12).
