
Catcher Ben Carhart Returns from Disabled List

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AUGUST 6, 2015) -- The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, have activated catcher Ben Carhart from the 7-day disabled list. In a corresponding roster move, second baseman Sutton Whiting has been optioned to Class A-Short Season Eugene.
Carhart, 25, was placed on the disabled list on June 7, and he hasn't played with the Pelicans since a road contest against the Potomac Nationals on May 31. A right-handed hitter, Carhart returns to the Pelicans with a .220 batting average (18-for-82) and a .301 on-base percentage. At the plate this year, he has collected seven doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, seven walks and 14 strikeouts. His two homers came in back-to-back starts, first at Winston-Salem on April 18, and then at Potomac on April 21. He returns to the Pelicans riding a five-game hitting streak in which he's batted .278 (5-for-18) with two doubles, two RBI, a pair of walks, and two strikeouts.
In four games with the AZL Cubs between August 2August 5, Carhart batted .333 (5-for-15) with two doubles, three RBI, and two strikeouts. A five-foot, ten-inch native of Dayton, Ohio, Carhart was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 35th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Stetson University.
Whiting, 23, has appeared at four different levels this season, playing as high as Double-A Tennessee. A switch-hitting middle infielder, he made two starts with the Pelicans after joining the team from Eugene on July 23, going 0-for-6 at the plate with four strikeouts. His only other appearance was as a pinch runner. The Cubs selected Whiting in the twenty-fourth round of the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft out of the University of Louisville.
The Pelicans' roster is at 25 active players, the Carolina League Limit, and includes five players on the disabled list.
The Pelicans wrap up their three-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks tonight starting at 7:05 p.m. ET.
