
Pelicans Pummel RiverDogs in Opening Night Blowout 15-0

CHARLESTON, S.C - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (1-0) obliterated the Charleston RiverDogs (0-1) 15-0 in seven and a half innings at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park on Thursday night.
The score was 1-0 in favor of the Pelicans entering the top of the second inning when the Pelicans offense jumpstarted. Ludwing Espinoza led off the inning with a walk and then stole second base. Following a Ty Southisene walk, Josiah Hartshorn laced an RBI single to make the score 2-0. In the ensuing at-bat, Cole Mathis (1) launched a three-run home run to make the score 5-0. After Logan Poteet reached on an error and Alexey Lumpuy drew a walk, Derniche Valdez cracked an two-run triple to make the game 7-0.
The Pelicans offense came to life again in the top of the fourth. Poteet led off with a single and then advanced to third on a double from Michael Carico. Lumpuy followed with a two-run double which increased the Pelicans lead to 9-0. A lineout in the next at-bat, moved Lumpuy to third. Jose Escobar then lined an RBI single to give Myrtle Beach a 10-0 lead. After two consecutive walks were issued, a third one was issued which brought home Escobar to make the game 11-0.
Myrtle Beach put up four more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Escobar and Southisene drew consecutive walks to start the frame. After a groundout advanced both runners, a wild pitch brought in Escobar which increased the lead to 12-0. Following Mathis drawing a walk, Poteet ripped an RBI single to move the lead to 13-0. In the next at-bat, Michael Carico peppered an RBI single which gave the Pelicans a 14-0 advantage. Lumpuy followed by grounding into a forceout, which scored Poteet to make the game 15-0.
After the conclusion of the top of the eighth inning, the skies opened up and poured rain down and eventually the game was called final.
LHP Jackson Brockett (1-0, 0.00 ERA) received the win, LHP Dominic Fritton (0-1, 27.00 ERA) was tagged with the loss.
The Pelicans and RiverDogs will continue their three-game series tomorrow night at "The Joe." First pitch is slated for 7:05 PM. Myrtle Beach will hand the ball to RHP Noah Edders (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Charleston will start RHP Luke Jackson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) on the rubber.
