Scouting the Opponent

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Class A, Chicago Cubs) last saw the Fireflies in the 2025 Carolina League South Division Playoff Series. The Fireflies swept the Pelicans in a best-of-three series to advance to the Carolina League Championship Series.

This year, the Pelicans have a host of great talent, including five of the Chicago Cubs' top 30 prospects according to MLB Pipeline. Their top prospect is the Cubs' eighth-ranked prospect, outfielder Josiah Hartshorn. The 19-year-old was selected in the sixth round of the 2025 draft. Last night, Hartshorn drew four walks in six plate appearances in his first Carolina League action. Corner infielder Cole Mathis returns to the beach. Mathis struck out swinging to end Game 2 of the Carolina League South Division Series at Segra Park and send the Fireflies to the Championship Series.

The club's top pitching prospect is righty Dominick Reid. Reid has an exceptional changeup and last year led college arms in strikeouts via the changeup with 66 such offerings. RHP Jostin Florentino is also back with the Pelicans after recording a 1.96 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) with the Pelicans in 2025.
