Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, NC - Winston-Salem's Yency Almonte struck out seven over six and 2/3 scoreless innings and Keon Barnum hit a solo home run in the first as the Dash clinched a series victory with a 3-0 shutout win against the Mudcats at Five County Stadium in Zebulon on Thursday night.
The Dash (55-55, 25-15) won the series two games to one and moved to 3.5 games ahead of the Mudcats (56-54, 22-19) in the second half standings. Carolina currently sits in third place behind the first place Dash and second place Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the second half standings.
Almonte (W, 2-0, 0.00) struck out five straight between the first and second innings and retired seven straight overall to start the game. The Mudcats managed to collect a hit against him in the third and two hits against him in the fourth, but did not score a run in either inning. Reed Harper hit into an inning ending double play in the third and Jacob Schrader did the same with two on in the fourth.
The Dash scored twice in the first and once more in the second while jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. Barnum's home run came with two outs in the first and was hit off Carolina's starter Rob Whalen. It was Barnum's seventh home run of the season and it put the Dash up 2-0 in the game. Whalen also allowed a leadoff single to Adam Engul in the first and Barnum's home run before leaving the game. He left with an apparent injury after the opening frame and finished with two runs allowed and two hits in the first.
Andrew Waszak replaced Whalen in the second and went on to pitch into the sixth. He walked a batter, gave up one hit and allowed one run in the second, but finished with just one run allowed over four and 1/3 innings on Thursday. He ended up walking four, striking out four and allowing just one run in his appearance.
Richie Tate finished the sixth in place of Waszak and eventually left one inherited runner on base while also leaving the bases loaded in the inning. Tate finished his outing with one and 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out three. Jorge Zavala pitched a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts and Bradley Roney worked the ninth and also struck out two.
The Mudcats bullpen combined to record 11 strikeouts over eight innings on Thursday. They also walked six, but kept the Dash without a run from the third to the end of the game.
The Dash bullpen took over in the seventh in place of Almonte and also kept the Mudcats scoreless over the late innings. Euclides Leyer struck out three and allowed a hit in the eighth and Brad Goldberg struck out one and gave up a hit in the ninth. Goldberg earned the save and finished the game by getting Sal Giardina to ground out to short.
Carolina is 1-2 in its current six game homestand and next play the Potomac Nationals on Friday night at Five County Stadium. Brandon Barker is scheduled to start for the Mudcats against the P-Nats on Friday. The first pitch at Five County Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
