Luke Jackson Gets the Call to the Majors
August 6, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AUGUST 6, 2015) -- Just two days after promoting former Pelicans outfielder Ryan Strausborger, the Texas Rangers have recalled 2012-2013 Pelicans right-handed pitcher Luke Jackson from Triple-A Round Rock. Jackson, who made 32 starts for the Pelicans, including one in the 2012 Carolina League playoffs, is the tenth former Pelicans player to make it to the Major Leagues for the first time this season and the 135th all-time to make it to the majors after his time on the Grand Stand.
Jackson, 23, has spent all season at Round Rock, compiling a 2-2 record and 4.05 ERA in 33 games, including five starts for the Express. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native has struck out 71 batters in the Pacific Coast League in just 60.0 innings while allowing 53 hits and 30 walks. Opposing batters have hit just three homers against him.
Primarily a starting pitcher until this season, Jackson was a staple in the Pelicans rotation from his arrival on June 22, 2012, until his departure the following year on August 1, when he was promoted to Double-A Frisco. The hard-throwing right-hander made the Carolina League Midseason All-Star roster in 2013 and would have finished second in the league in ERA if he qualified (2.41), but the late season promotion prevented it. In two seasons with the Pelicans, Jackson posted a 14-6 record with a 3.19 ERA in 32 outings, all starts, and struck out 178 Carolina Leaguers, the ninth-most in Pelicans history.
Jackson earned the victory in the lone Pelicans' playoff win in 2012, a 4-1 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash, on September 5, 2012. In that game, he tossed five innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts.
The Rangers play Seattle on Friday at Safeco Field at 10:10 p.m. ET.
Jackson is the tenth former Pelicans player to make the big leagues for the first time this season, joining Keone Kela (with Pelicans in 2014, debuted with Rangers), Odubel Herrera (2012-2014, Phillies), Wilfredo Boscan (2011, Pirates), Hanser Alberto (2012-2014, Rangers), Alex "Chi Chi" Gonzalez (2013-2014, Rangers), Joey Gallo (2014, Rangers), Michael Broadway (2008, Giants), Abel De Los Santos (2014, Nationals), and Strausborger (2011, Rangers).
The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
