Frederick Keys News Release
Salem, Va. - The Salem Red Sox scratched across two runs in the fifth, while the Frederick Keys left 13 on base in a 3-2 setback on Thursday night at LewisGale Field. With the loss, the Keys and Red Sox split the season series (8-8), while orange and black see their four-game winning streak come to a close.
Salem plated a run in the first against Mitch Horacek, after a walk to Forrestt Allday, a ground out, a passed ball and an RBI bounce out by Kevin Heller. It was one of two RBIs the former Amherst product would record on the game.
In the fourth, the visitors leveled the score with two outs. After Kevin McAvoy struck out Yaisel Mederos and Wynston Sawyer, Conor Bierfeldt coaxed a seven-pitch walk. He advanced on a single by Anthony Caronia and scored on a second base knock by Jay Gonzalez.
The only run McAvoy (7-9) allowed all night, the sinkerballer picked up the victory tossing 5.1 innings of one-run baseball. He scattered four hits, walked four and struck out seven. The seven punch outs were a career-best.
Salem broke the deadlock in the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Mauricio Duban and Wendell Rijo put runners at the corners with one out, while the duo pulled off a double steal of home. Rijo later scored with Heller at bat, after the former was put in motion.
Despite posting his third quality start in a row, Horacek (6-13) suffered his fourth straight loss. Working six innings, he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out seven. This season, Horacek has received a decision in 19 of his 22 outings.
Armed with a chance to take the lead in the seventh, the Keys stranded the bases loaded against Taylor Grover. With men at first and second, the Sox right-hander plunked Sawyer, but got Bierfeldt to pop out to shallow center. Frederick ended the game 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
In the ninth, Mederos hit an opposite field homer to right off Mike Adams, but the Keys would get no closer. The longball was the only run Adams allowed in two innings, as the southpaw registered his sixth save. The Keys travel to Myrtle Beach to begin a three-game series with the Pelicans on Friday night. Left-hander Matt Taylor (1-1, 3.48) makes the start for the Keys and will be opposed by Birds right-hander Jeremy Null (1-1, 4.33). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. The Keys return home on August 11 when the Lynchburg Hillcats come to town.
