ZEBULON, N.C. (August 6, 2015) - Three Winston-Salem pitchers combined for a five-hit shutout, and the Dash claimed their critical series in Zebulon with a 3-0 victory over Carolina on Thursday at Five County Stadium.
As a result of this rubber match win, the Dash (25-15, 55-55) extend their lead on Carolina (22-19, 56-54) to three-and-a-half games in the race for the Southern Division's final playoff spot. Winston-Salem accomplished this feat with its 10th shutout victory, one shy of a Carolina League-high.
Dash starter Yency Almonte (2-0) went the first 6.2 innings, scattering three hits and a walk against seven strikeouts. Almonte struck out the side in the second inning, completing a stretch of five straight punchouts. In his two appearances with Winston-Salem, Almonte has not given up an earned run in 13.2 frames.
With two Mudcats on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Euclides Leyer replaced Almonte and fanned Sal Giardina, keeping the score at 3-0 Dash. Leyer stranded two more in a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
Brad Goldberg worked a scoreless ninth inning for his fifth save, clinching the series win for the Dash. The Dash's bullpen has converted 21 of its last 22 save opportunities.
Adam Engel began the game with a single to left. He stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and came into score the game's first run on Trey Michalczewski's bouncer to first. Keon Barnum then pounded a solo homer, his seventh long ball of the season, to right to give Winston-Salem an early 2-0 advantage.
Carolina starter Rob Whalen (1-2) left after that two-run first due to an injury. In the second frame, Mudcats reliever Andrew Waszak issued a one-out walk to T.J. Williams. A wild pitch bumped Williams to second before a Cleuluis Rondon single put runners on the corners. Nolan Earley's RBI groundout plated Williams to complete the game's scoring.
Winston-Salem begins a three-game series on Friday at BB&T Ballpark against the Salem Red Sox, marking the first time these two division foes have met in the second half. All-Star Matt Heidenreich (11-2, 2.60 ERA) opposes Salem's Daniel McGrath (1-4, 4.09 ERA). Pregame radio coverage is available at 6:45 p.m., with the first pitch at 7 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
All fans can enjoy a Fireworks Show, presented by Grand Rental Station, after Winston's series opener with Salem on Friday. For tickets to the exciting weekend series, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
