Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, CA - San Francisco Giants' reliever and fan-favorite Sergio Romo will make his Sacramento River Cats debut tonight at Raley Field as he begins a rehab assignment for a right elbow flexor strain. He is expected to pitch one inning tonight as the River Cats open their final homestand of May against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
Romo last pitched for the Giants on April 10 at AT&T Park against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was placed on the disabled list by San Francisco six days later. Romo has dealt with elbow issues throughout his career, even missing some of Spring Training earlier this season. Since being placed on the disabled list, Romo has thrown a number of live innings in Extended Spring Training at the Giants' Arizona facilities.
With tonight's appearance, Romo will be the second Giants pitcher to join the River Cats' ranks this season, following right-hander George Kontos. Kontos made four appearances with Sacramento between May 8 and 13 during his rehab assignment.
Romo was drafted by the Giants in 2005 and has spent his entire career in the organization. He was an instrumental part of all three World Championship runs in 2010, '12, and '14. His called strike three against the Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera to clinch the 2014 World Championship is one of the most iconic strikeouts in Giants history.
First pitch for tonight's game at Raley Field against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates at 6 p.m. Tickets are still available for tonight's game and the rest of the homestand, which includes a Beat LA flag giveaway, Salute to Armed Forces (with Flight Suit jerseys), Bark in the Ballpark, and more.
