Reno Snaps Zephyrs' Win Streak with Four-Run Ninth

May 23, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Former Zephyr Kyle Jensen's single with two outs in the top of the ninth inning drove in the go-ahead run, and the Reno Aces went on to defeat New Orleans, 6-2 on Monday night.

Tied 2-2 in the ninth, Craig Breslow retired the first two batters before Mike Freeman singled up the middle and Peter O'Brien walked. Jensen then ripped a single to left for his third hit of the game to give Reno the lead.

The Aces tacked on three insurance runs, all of which were charged to Breslow (0-1), and Enrique Burgos retired the Z's in order to snap the Zephyrs' four-game win streak.

Both teams struggled to mount any offense through the first six innings as starting pitchers Chris Reed and Braden Shipley engaged in a pitchers duel.

The Zephyrs missed a scoring opportunity in the second inning after Tomas Telis and Matt Juengel led off with back-to-back singles. Isaac Galloway's swinging bunt advanced both runners, but Elliot Soto and Reed struck out to end the inning.

That began a run of 15 consecutive batters retired by Shipley, eight of which came on strikeouts.

Not to be outdone, Reed overcame early control issues to breeze through the middle innings en route to equaling a career high with nine strikeouts. The left-hander stranded five baserunners in the first three innings, then retired the final 10 batters he faced and ended his night by striking out the side in the sixth.

Reno finally broke through in the seventh against reliever Andre Rienzo, who loaded the bases with no outs after Jack Reinheimer doubled off the top of the left field wall and Ed Lucas and Mark Thomas drew consecutive walks.

Rienzo struck out pinch hitter Zach Borenstein, but Todd Glaesmann's line drive to center field was deep enough to score Reinheimer from third for a sacrifice fly.

The Z's mounted a rally of their own against the Reno bullpen in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Stites issued a leadoff walk to Destin Hood, who raced around the bases to tie the score on a double to the center field fence by Telis.

Telis is hitting .400 over his last 15 games, and has at least one RBI in each of his last five contests.

One out later, Galloway stroked a single to center to score Telis with the go-ahead run, but the lead was short-lived.

Peter O'Brien greeted Breslow with a ringing triple off the center field wall, and Jensen singled past a drawn-in infield to tie the game at 2-2.

Dominic Leone (1-1) picked up the win after working around a leadoff walk in the eighth.

The Zephyrs and Aces continue the series on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
