Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES - Iowa took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Willson Contreras launched a ball over the wall in right-center, but the El Paso Chihuahuas (23-20) used a productive fifth inning to defeat the I-Cubs (18-24) 6-1, Monday night at Principal Park.
RHP Stephen Fife made his first start since April 13 after spending over a month on the disabled list. He tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, but was forced to end his night early due to injury. Fife finished with five strike outs, two hits and no walks.
Jean Machi (1-1) was the first man out of the bullpen and ended up with his first loss of the season. Machi gave up three earned runs on three hits, including two home runs. Nick Noonan was the first Chihuahua batter to go deep, tying the game at 1-1 in the fifth.
The Chihuahuas grabbed their first lead and opened the game up in the top of the seventh when they put five runs across the plate. Alex Dickerson extended his hitting streak to 21 after pinch-hitting a three-run homer to right in the inning.
Felix Pena continued his success on the season. Coming on in relief in the seventh, Pena threw 1.2 innings, struck out three and did not allow a run.
After Contreras' homer in the first, the I-Cubs were held scoreless for the remainder of the game, despite out-hitting the opposition nine to seven. Arismendy Alcantara was the only I-Cub to have a multi-hit night, finishing 2-for-3 before being replaced by Logan Watkins in the eighth.
Aaron Northcraft (3-0) came out of the bullpen for El Paso in the sixth. He allowed no runs on one hit and two walks to nab the win.
The I-Cubs take on El Paso for game two of the four-game series at 6:38 p.m., Tuesday at Principal Park. Listen live on AM 940 or at www.iowacubs.com.
