Harrisburg Senators News Release
Brad Meyers threw six scoreless innings, and the Senators offense did enough to secure a victory, as the Sens beat the visiting New Britain Rock Cats on Thursday night at Metro Bank Park, by a final score of 3-1. The game was played in front of a crowd of 2155.
It was the second consecutive scoreless outing for Meyers (1-0), who now has pitched eleven innings without allowing a run for the Senators. Victor Garate picked up his fourth save by throwing an inning and a third without giving up a run. Starting pitcher Tyler Robertson (0-3) took the loss for New Britain.
The Senators (15-19) led off the first inning with three consecutive hits, with the third an RBI double off the bat of Jesus Valdez that drove in Michael Martinez, and put the Sens in front 1-0. Neither team scored again until the sixth, when Robertson again allowed the first three batters of an inning to reach base. After Danny Espinosa walked to lead off the frame, Jesus Valdez singled, and then Chris Marrero singled home Espinosa from second to double the lead.
The Rock Cats (6-26) got on the board in the top of the eighth, when Joe Benson came around to score on a two-out single from Ben Revere. Benson had tripled with one out off of reliever Hassan Pena.
Leonard Davis of the Senators would strike right back in the bottom of the frame, blasting a solo home run off of reliever Chris Province to increase the lead to two once again. The homer was Davis' fifth of the year, and bounced off of Benson's glove before clearing the right-field fence. Davis was one of seven Senators to record at least one hit, with only Valdez hitting safely twice.
Game two of the four-game series between the teams is Friday night at 7 PM at Metro Bank Park. Jeff Mandel (0-4, 3.82) goes for the Senators, against Mike McCardell (0-3, 4.15) of the Rock Cats. Radio coverage on 1460 AM The Ticket and www.senatorsbaseball.com begins at 6:45 PM.
