TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Altoona Curve will meet in the opener of a four-game series...The Flying Squirrels recorded their sixth shutout of the season and Daryl Maday earned his sixth straight win in a 5-0 victory in the finale of a three-game series with the Baysox on Wednesday afternoon at Prince George's Stadium.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander David Mixon gets the start in the opener of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Earned the win on 5/8 at Harrisburg after tossing seven scoreless innings giving up just one while striking eight and walking one...Combined with Tony Pena Jr. on a one-hit shutout...Lone hit allowed was a Brad Coon double to right-center field in the bottom of the first inning but Coon was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple...Retired 10 straight batters following the Coon double...Seven innings of work matched the longest start of the season and career...Eight strike outs matched a season-high for a Richmond pitcher...Threw 86 pitches, 54 strikes...Retired the leadoff batter in five of his seven innings on the mound...Recorded eight strike outs, seven ground outs, and five fly outs...Has worked nine consecutive scoreless innings...Has allowed just five runs over his last 30 2/3 innings of work after giving up four runs in five innings in his Double-A debut 4/11 at Bowie...Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week (5/3-5/9)...Ranks fourth in the league with a 2.27 ERA and .197 batting average against...Is 0-for-7 at the plate with five strike outs.
Right-hander Tim Alderson gets the nod in the opener of the series for the Curve...Matched his shortest out of the season after going 4 2/3 against Erie on 5/8...Received a no-decision at The Diamond on 5/3 after allowing five runs, four earned, on a season-high nine hits in five innings...Has not thrown more than five innings in his first four six...Has allowed 41 hits in 29 1/3 innings...Has stuck out 21 and walked eight over that same span...Enters 2010 rated as the #7 prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization according to Baseball America...Acquired from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for second baseman Freddie Sanchez last July...Made five stats with Advanced-A San Jose before being promoted to Double-A Connecticut last season...Went 6-1 with a 3.47 ERA in 13 starts with the Defenders prior to the trade...Was 3-1 with a 4.66 ERA in seven starts afterward...Originally selected by the Giants in the first round (#22 overall) in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
RISING WATER: Richmond has matched its high-water mark of seven games over .500 at 20-13...The club was the third team in the Eastern League to 20 wins...The Flying Squirrels are 19-7 over their last 26 games after starting the season 1-6...Richmond is 6-1-1 over its last eight series...The club is just a 1/2 game back of Altoona for first place after trailing by five games on April 17th.
NO NEAL-ING DOWN: Outfielder Thomas Neal has hits in each of his last eight games, his longest hitting streak of the season...The 22-year-old is 11-for-34 (.324) over his last eight games with five RBI and three runs scored...Neal has raised his batting average from .223 to .250 over the course of the streak...He has appeared in all 33 games for the Flying Squirrels this season including 29 games in left field and four games as the designated hitter...His four stolen bases match his season are a new career-high...Neal stole 12 bases in 15 tries in the Arizona Fall League this past offseason.
ROGER THAT: Outfielder Roger Kieschnick blasted a pair of home runs yesterday afternoon...He has now homered three times over the last two days...It is the second time in his career that Kieschnick had a multi-homer game (6/27/09 vs. STK)...Thomas Neal is the only other Richmond batter to hit two long balls in the same game...Last season, Kieschnick homered in consecutive games three times...Prior to his recent surge, he had not homered since 8/12 at Bakersfield...The 23-year-old went 52 games spanning 202 at-bats between home runs...The four RBIs yesterday afternoon were a season-high for Kieschnick and were the second-most in a contest this season for a Richmond batter (Neal - 5 RBI 4/23 @ REA).
SAVING GRACE: Right-hander Rafael Cova is second in the Eastern League in saves with eight...He has converted on all of his save opportunities...The 28-year-old currently has not allowed a run over his last 8 2/3 innings on the mound and has not allowed an earned run yet this season...The lone run he has allowed was unearned in the bottom of the 14th inning on April 13th at Altoona leading to his only loss.
MAKING THEIR PITCH: The Flying Squirrels' pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 2.68 ERA...The club has also allowed an Eastern League-low 95 runs...The 238 hits allowed by Richmond are second-fewest in the league (Trenton-223)...Flying Squirrel pitching has allowed just 37 runs, 34 earned, on 126 hits over 176 innings in the club's 20 wins (1.74 ERA)...In the team's 13 losses, the pitchers have allowed 60 runs, 54 earned, on 118 hits over 112 2/3 innings (4.31 ERA)...Richmond pitching leads the Eastern League with six shutouts.
DOUBLETREE DOWNTOWN DOUBLE PLAYS: The Richmond Flying Squirrels have turned 43 double plays in their first 33 games including six on 5/7 in Harrisburg...The club leads the Eastern League in double plays turned and has not gone more than two games without turning two.
ERROR MESSAGE: The Flying Squirrels have committed just 17 errors in their first 33 games...Richmond has committed the fewest errors in the Eastern League and currently leads the league with a .987 fielding percentage.
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: Yesterday's 5-0 win for Richmond was the club's largest margin of victory on the season.
HAPPY BIRTHDY TO YOU: Outfielder Clay Timpner and left-hander Wilmin Rodriguez both have a birthday today...Timpner turns 27 and Rodriguez turns 25.
