B-Mets Skid Hits Three with 5-2 Loss at Trenton

The Binghamton offense has run into hard times of late, scoring just two runs for the third straight game leading to a 5-2 loss at the hands of the Trenton Thunder Thursday night at Waterfront Park. Brahiam Maldonado impressed again with a perfect 2-2 showing, including a double and an RBI.

The Thunder got on the board first. Austin Krum singled with one out off starter Eddie Kunz to reach. David Adams followed with a double to the alley in right, which brought Krum around from first, making it 1-0 Trenton (18-15).

Binghamton (19-15) answered in the third. Maldonado took a walk from starter David Phelps with one out and was joined on base by Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who was hit by a pitch. Then, Luis Hernandez evened the score with a run-scoring single to left.

The B-Mets grabbed their only lead of the contest in the fourth after Phelps issued a pair of one-out walks. With two outs, Maldonado singled to left, plating Carlos Guzman with the go-ahead run to make it 2-1.

The lead was short-lived though as Trenton took advantage of a Kirk Nieuwenhuis error in center to score a run in the fourth. Kunz walked Austin Krum on four pitches to open the inning on the wrong note. Adams came next and hit a routine fly to center that Nieuwenhuis dropped as he battled the lights. Krum motored around to third on the drop and Adams reached second with no one out. Austin Romine drove in Krum with a fielder's choice to tie it at two.

Trenton landed its game-winning runs with a three-run seventh. After tossing a scoreless sixth, righty Clint Everts came out for the seventh and was rudely greeted by Marcos Vecchionacci, who double to left. Luis Nunez followed with a single to put runners at the corners. After Justin Christian grounded out to Everts, Krum was intentionally walked, loading the bases and leading to Everts departure. Jose De La Torre entered next looking to induce a double-play groundball. He did force a groundball, but it was a slow roller hit to third that gave third baseman Zach Lutz only a play at first, allowing the winning run to score. Brandon Laird added a two-run single to put the lead at three.

Eric Wordekemper held the three-run margin in the eighth and the ninth for a two-inning save. Noel Castillo notched the win with a shutout seventh for the Thunder.

Eddie Kunz pitched well in the no-decision. The converted reliever offered up a five-inning performance in which he allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits.

The B-Mets will try to snap their three-game losing streak Friday night at 7:05 in game two of the series with Trenton. RHP Dylan Owen (2-1, 3.34) gets the call for Binghamton against RHP Lance Pendleton (1-2, 5.28).
