Harrisburg Senators News Release

The Harrisburg Senators downed the Erie SeaWolves 5-3 in extra innings Monday night at UPMC Park. The Senators scored a pair of runs in the top of the 11th en route to snapping a five-game losing skid.

The Senators jumped to an early lead in the first when Yadiel Hernandez hammered a 1-0 pitch from Erie Starter Sandy Baez over the left field fence for his sixth home run of the season.

Erie responded with a run in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Josh Lester off Senators starter Wirkin Estevez.

The game remained tied until the fifth. The lead-off batter, Osvaldo Abreu, crushed an 0-1 pitch from Baez for a home run to left as the Senators retook the lead 2-1.

Estevez retired 14 batters in a row between the first and fifth innings, but Erie was able to tie the game in the sixth. With two outs and Kody Eaves at third base, Troy Montgomery hit a groundball to first that was misplayed by Drew Ward which allowed the tying run to score.

Estevez allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out six and walking two. The right-hander worked his third consecutive quality start.

Baez surrendered a pair of runs on three hits.

The scored stayed tied at 2-2 into the tenth when the Senators jumped in front. With the free runner, Abreu, at third after a sacrifice bunt by Zach Collier, Kelvin Gutierrez drove him home with a two-out single to left to put the Senators ahead 3-2.

Erie tied the game in the bottom of the frame when the free-runner, AJ Simcox, scored on a wild pitch with two outs.

In the top of the 11th, Dan Gamache put the Senators back in front with an RBI single to score the free-runner, Yadiel Hernandez, and give the Senators a one-run advantage. Later the inning, Gamache scored from third on a wild pitch as the Senators a 5-3 lead.

Derek Self closed the game with a perfect bottom of the frame to seal the victory and notch his first save of the season.

Jeff Ames (1-0) picked up the win after allowing one unearned run in his lone inning while Gerson Moreno (0-1), who surrendered the two runs in the eleventh, took the loss.

After the first two SeaWolves batters singled to lead off the first, Erie had just one hit over the final 10 frames. Senators relievers Roman Mendez, Bryan Harper, Kaleb Fleck, Ames and Self combined to finish the game with five hitless innings, limiting Erie to three walks and one unearned run while striking out nine.

The Senators go for the series win in game two of the series Tuesday night. Brady Dragmire starts for the Senators while Erie counters with starter Spencer Turnbull. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at UPMC Park. The game can be heard on CBS Sports Radio 95.3 FM, 96.5 FM and 1400 AM or cbssportsharrisburg.com.
