Akron RubberDucks News Release
Richmond's Cory Taylor tossed six shutout innings and combined with three relievers to slip by the Akron RubberDucks, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon at the Diamond in Richmond, Va.
Turning Point
The Flying Squirrels (17-14) scored the only run of the game in the third inning on a pair of infield hits and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Howard against Akron starter Matt Whitehouse (1-1).
Mound Presence
Whitehouse made his first start of 2018 and worked 3.1 innings. He allowed just four hits, two bunt singles and two infield hits. He did not issue a walk and fanned two. Nick Pasquale (2.2 IP) and Luke Eubank (2.0 IP) followed with scoreless relief for the RubberDucks (20-12).
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks did not register a hit off Cory Taylor (4-1) until Daniel Salters lined a solid single to right in the fifth inning. It was the only hit Taylor allowed in his six innings of work. The Ducks had runners on base in each of the last five innings, but could not come up with a timely hit. Closer Caleb Simpson came on in the ninth and allowed a walk to Mark Mathias and a hit by Todd Hankins but retired the final two hitters to secure his sixth save.
Notebook
The RubberDucks saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end...Richmond avoided the sweep, but Akron won two of three in the series and six of seven on the road trip...It was the third shutout loss of the season for the RubberDucks...Ka'ai Tom had the only extra-base hit of the day for the Ducks with a double in the 7thinning...Time of game: 2:31...Attendance: 6,338.
