Hartford Yard Goats News Release
HARTFORD- Ryan Metzler belted his third home run of the home stand, Guilford native Craig Schlitter recorded his first career save and the Hartford Yard Goats took two out of three games from the Mets affiliate, Binghamton, with a 7-3 win Wednesday afternoon at Dunkin' Donuts Park. The victory, Hartford's seventh in eight games overall and 13th in its last 14 home games, came before the sixth straight sellout crowd and eighth overall, 6,528. Hartford, the first club in the Eastern League to crack the 100,000 mark in season attendance in 2018, has now drawn 103,350. The victory also placed Hartford (19-13) a season-high six games over .500.
Schlitter retired nine of the 10 batters he faced, allowing just one walk. He struck out four, including Tim Tebow on a called third strike. Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner, batted once, entering the game as part of a double-switch in the sixth inning.
Hartford jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, against knuckleball pitcher Mickey Janis, on a two-run double by Wes Rogers. The inning featured four stolen bases, including two by Sam Hilliard. Metzler's two-run shot to left, made it 4-0, and when Garret Hampson homered in the fifth to increase the lead to five runs, it appeared the Yard Goats would coast to victory. However, Binghamton (14-15) came back against winning pitcher Jack Wynkoop with three runs in the sixth. The southpaw yielded a lead off walk to Champ Stuart, followed by consecutive doubles by Levi Michael, Jeff McNeil and Peter Alonso. Following a walk and a ground out, Wynkoop was lifted for Jason Garcia, who threw a double play ground ball to end the uprising. Wynkoop pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out one.
The Yard Goats added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. With two outs, Chris Rabago reached first on catcher's interference; a pinch-hit triple by Omar Carrizales and an RBI-single by Hampson closed out the scoring.
Rogers and Hampson each had two hits and two RBI to pace Hartford's 10-hit attack. Metzler added a two-run homer. Hartford set a season-high in stolen bases for a game with six, including three by Hilliard and two by Rogers. Jeff McNeil had a two-run double for Binghamton.
The Yard Goats launch a brief four-game road trip to Bowie, starting Thursday night at 6:35 against the Bowie Bay Sox. Hartford will send RHP Ryan Castellani to the mound, while LHP John Means will pitch for the Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The game will be broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio.1410.com and MiLB.com.
