Senators gaining steam with 4-2 win against Albany

BINGHAMTON, NY - Denis Hamel and Steve Martins each recorded three points while Cory Pecker chipped in with another two to give the Binghamton Senators their fourth win in five games. The win brought the Sens to one point behind the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for fifth place in the East Division.
After a scoreless first period, Albany had a great chance to take a 1-0 lead early in the second period. Binghamton goaltender Kelly Guard skated behind the net to chase a dump-in as the puck took an unusual bounce out of the corner and right to the front of a wide-open net. Aaron Varos found the puck on his stick, but shot it wide of the goal. Binghamton picked up the puck and turned things right back down the ice. Hamel took a feed from Martins and ripped a shot past Albany goaltender Frank Doyle for a 1-0 Binghamton advantage.
Martins then extended the lead for the Sens with a goal of his own at the 17:54 mark of the second. Martins twelfth tally of the season came on the power play as Hamel and Jeff Heerema each picked up an assist.
Binghamton jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the final frame as Pecker was able to pick up his fourth goal of the year. Pecker tried to center the puck in front of the net and it redirected off an Albany defender into the back of the net.
Albany would climb back into the game and come within a 3-2 score thanks to goals by Ivan Khomutov and Barry Tallackson. With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, the Senators found themselves clinging to a one-goal lead.
Binghamton tough guy Danny Bois sent a sigh of relief through the 4,531 fans at the Arena, when after a sustained offensive flurry by the Rats he took the puck from an Albany stick and fired it down the ice into the open net to secure the win by a score of 4-2.
Guard was stellar in net for a second straight game and stopped 30 of 32 shots while earning the win for his club. Doyle turned away 35 of Binghamton's 38 offerings, but was saddled with his thirteenth loss of the season.
The Sens closed out the contest one for five with the man advantage while Albany capitalized on two of their seven power-play chances.
Binghamton hit the road immediately following tonight's game en route to Toronto for a 7:30 p.m tilt with the Marlies on Tuesday.
