Griffins' Wilson named CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week
Published on December 26, 2005 under American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League announced today that Grand Rapids Griffins defenseman Clay Wilson has been named the CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending December 25, 2005. In three games last week, Wilson scored four goals - including two game-winners - and added one assist for five points as the Griffins stayed atop the North Division with three victories.
On Wednesday night in Milwaukee, Wilson became just the second defenseman in team history to score a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal in the same game, and he also recorded an assist for a three-point effort in a 5-0 Griffins win. The next night, Wilson netted another power-play goal as Grand Rapids beat Hershey, 6-4, and Friday, he broke a 1-1 tie with 2:08 left in the game and the Griffins went on to defeat Cleveland, 4-1.
In recognition of his achievement, Wilson will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming Griffins home game.
The 22-year-old Wilson joined Grand Rapids on Nov. 26 and has recorded five goals and five assists for 10 points in 15 games with the Griffins. A native of Sturgeon Lake, Minn., and a long-time resident of the town of North Pole, Alaska, Wilson is in his first professional season after four years at Michigan Tech University.
Other nominees for CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week include Bridgeport goaltender Wade Dubielewicz, Chicago right wing Stephen Baby, Houston right wing Matt Foy, Manchester goaltender Adam Hauser, Norfolk right wing Milan Bartovic, Portland forward Corey Perry, Providence left wing Nathan Robinson, Syracuse defenseman Andy Delmore and Toronto forward John Pohl.
