Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA "" The Clinton LumberKings started off a long home stand with a series win, beating the Beloit Snappers in the finale, 7-3. With the victory, Clinton took the series three games to one to move firmly back into the playoff hunt.
Beloit struck first with another big fly from their power hitters. Renato Nunez hit a solo home run, his 17th of the year, to lead off the second and give the Snappers a 1-0 lead.
Clinton took the lead on a long ball from an unlikely source. Tim Lopes crushed a two-run shot off the scoreboard in left-center for his first home run of the year.
The Snappers retook the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. After a double by Ryan Mathews, the visitors had runners on the corners with one away. Aaron Shipman bounced an RBI groundout to tie the game at 2-2. Then Brett Vertigan executed a perfect safety squeeze bunt down the third base line. Mathews scampered home on the bunt single to give Beloit a 3-2 lead.
The seesaw battle continued with Clinton taking back the upper hand in the bottom of the fifth. Three consecutive singles from Martin Peguero, Ketel Marte and Jamodrick McGruder loaded the bases for Jordy Lara. The third baseman bounced on through the hole at short to score both Peguero and Marte to give Clinton back the lead.
In the sixth, Clinton added to their advantage with an RBI single by Jamodrick McGruder and a bases loaded double by Tyler Marlette. The double scored a pair of runs, bringing Clinton's lead to 7-3.
Victor Sanchez earned his third win of the year, and his first since throwing a no-hitter on July 17th against Lansing. Deyvi Jimenez took the loss as he gave up 13 hits in total in four innings of relief. George Mieses picked up a nine-out save, his first with Clinton.
With the win, and Peoria's 5-2 loss to Quad Cities, Clinton moves into a tie for fourth place in the Western Division. The LumberKings currently hold the tiebreaker over the Chiefs for the final playoff berth in the second half.
The LumberKings welcome in the Kane County Cougars for a four-game set starting Saturday. Clinton sends right-hander Rigoberto Garcia (0-2, 6.53) in the opener, and Kane County turns to right-hander Starling Peralta (0-0, 0.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM CT at Ashford University Field.
