Peoria Chiefs News Release
Davenport, IA- The Peoria Chiefs scored two runs in the top of the first but didn't score again as the Quad Cities River Bandits completed a damaging four-game sweep 5-2 Friday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 57-50 overall and 19-21 on the second half, 5 games behind Quad Cities and now tied with Clinton for the wild card spot with 30 games remaining.
The Chiefs came out swinging against Chris Devenski in the top of the first as CJ McElroy Jr. singled to left on the first pitch of the game. McElroy moved to second on a Charlie Tilson sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a single by Bruce Caldwell. Jordan Walton put the Chiefs up 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to right with Caldwell advancing to second. Breyvic Valera singled home Caldwell and the Chiefs were on top 2-0 before Devenski got out of the inning.
Peoria left a runner at third base in the second, left runners on the corners in the third and left another runner at third base in the fifth. Quad Cities took advantage of the lack of production to take the lead in the fourth. Trailing 2-1, the Bandits tied the game on a leadoff home run to center by Teoscar Hernandez, his 10th of the season. With one out Carlos Correa doubled and scored on a single by Dan Gulbransen for a 3-2 Bandits lead. Garcia walked Bobby Borchering and with two down, Jobduan Morales singled home a run for a 4-2 Quad Cities lead.
Peoria put two on base to start the sixth but hit into a double play and left a runner at third. In the bottom of the inning the Bandits added on against reliever Joe Scanio. Austin Elkins singled and scored on a triple to right by Hernandez for a 5-2 Quad Cities lead.
The Chiefs loaded the bases in the seventh but again couldn't score. Three singles loaded the bases with one out but Mitchell Lambson got Valera to pop up to second and Jeremy Schaffer flew out to right to end the threat. The Chiefs put two on base in the ninth with a single and an error but Valera grounded out to second to end the game with runners left at second and third.
Garcia (3-4) took the loss allowing four runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked two, hit two, gave up a home run and struck out three. Scanio allowed one run on three hits over two innings while hitting one batter. Dixon Llorens allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one in his scoreless inning.
