Burlington Bees News Release

The Burlington Bees cranked out six runs on five hits, which all came in the second, en route to a 6-2 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday night at Community Field.

Entering the series with the Kernels (66-42, 26-14), the Bees (43-62, 17-23) had lost consecutive series after winning four series in a row; however, the Bees pitching staff and the clutch bats came to play against Cedar Rapids, as the Bees took three of four from the league's best team.

All of the action for Burlington occurred in the second against Tim Atherton. Atherton (5-4) surrendered six runs, four earned on five hits. The five hits were the only hits that the Bees got tonight, but it was enough to pull of the win.

Hinkle led off the second with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Sandy Martinez. Matt Scioscia knocked a ball through the middle to bring home Hinkle for the first run of the game. Riley Good, Garrett Cannizaro and Exicardo Cayones each had RBI groundouts in the inning, while Angel Rosa picked up a two-run single during the frame.

The Bees' pitching staff kept the league's best offense quiet before and after the one hour and six minute rain delay. Reid Scoggins drew the start and continued to impress, tossing four scoreless innings, while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts. Scoggins was lifted from the game after the rain came in the middle of the fourth.

Joey Krehbiel took the mound after the delay and was nothing short of spectacular. Krehbiel (5-5) retired the first 10 batters he faced, allowing one run in the eighth. He twirled four innings of one-run ball, striking out five.

Adam Brett Walker hit his 23rd home run of the season in the ninth against Christopher O'Grady, but the southpaw struck out two in the ninth to finish off the Kernels and give the Bees the series victory.

Burlington now sits two games back of Peoria for the final playoff spot, and will take on the Chiefs for a four-game series beginning on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Pat Lowery, fresh off his complete game, will toe the rubber for the Bees, while Brad Watson will be on the hill for the Chiefs.
