Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - Michael Conforto, Brock Peterson and Brandon Nimmo produced three consecutive RBI doubles in a three-run fourth inning to push the Binghamton Mets to a 3-2 win over the New Britain Rock Cats on Monday night at New Britain Stadium. Seth Lugo, Matt Koch and Jon Velasquez struck out twelve, a team season-high, in Binghamton's fourth straight win and ninth in ten games.
Down by a run in the fourth, Binghamton started the hit parade with a single from LJ Mazzilli. Conforto belted a game-tying RBI double off the right-field wall and Peterson pushed Binghamton ahead by pelting the left-field wall with a double. Nimmo capped the three-run frame by pulling an RBI two-bagger inside first base.
Pat Valaika took Lugo deep in the first inning, but New Britain failed to build off the momentum. The B-Mets righty responded by retiring nine of the next ten Rock Cats he faced, scattering a pair of singles over three scoreless innings.
Lugo received some help from his battery mate to keep the Rock Cats offense in check. Jayson Langfels, after getting hit by Lugo's first pitch of the fifth, was gunned down by Xorge Carrillo on an attempted steal of second. Carrillo struck again by throwing out Mike Tauchman at second in the sixth.
The right-hander needed no help to close his night with a bang. After walking Jordan Patterson to start the seventh, Lugo struck out the next three Rock Cats he faced, closing the night with his sixth straight scoreless innings.
New Britain put two in scoring position to the start the eight when Matt Koch skipped a wild throw to first on Juan Ciriaco's bunt single. Mike Tauchman grounded out to cut the lead to one, but Koch struck out the last two hitters, stranding the potential tying run at third.
Jon Velasquez struck out two in a perfect ninth to earn his 14th save of the season.
Lugo (5-4) allowed one run on four hits over seven innings to earn his third win in as many starts. Carle (9-6) was tagged for three runs on five hits over eight innings in his first career loss to Binghamton.
The B-Mets (51-43) continue their first visit to New Britain on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Gabriel Ynoa takes the hill against RHP Matt Flemer. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
