Second-Period Stumble Fells Hawks

Portland, Ore. - The Winterhawks (39-20-5-3) took an early lead, but a four-goal second period helped push the Thunderbirds (54-10-1-2) to a 7-3 win on Friday.

After honoring their 20-year-olds and presenting team awards, the Winterhawks raced out of the gates with a goal just 2:17 into this one. Josh Zakreski circled the zone with the puck before firing a shot into bodies in the slot, then followed the play and poked home a rebound for an early Hawks lead. Kevin Korchinski soon responded for the visitors with a goal at 7:22 and sent the game into intermission tied at one apiece.

Seattle's explosive second period started with two tallies in a two-minute span, as Lucas Ciona tipped home a power-play goal at 6:51 and Korchinski netted his second at 8:37. The T-Birds tacked on two more later in the frame as Brad Lambert and Coster Dunn lit the lamp, but the Hawks pushed back late on Gabe Klassen's team-leading 35th goal of the year at 18:41. Skating down the left wing side, James Stefan dished to Robbie Fromm-Delorme in the center, who then found Klassen on the right wing for a quick shot past Milic.

Two more Seattle goals from Reid Schaefer and Colton Dach further inflated the T-Birds lead in the third, but again the Hawks pressed, and a Marek Alscher wrister from range put the team on the board once more at 13:44. Thomas Milic (35 saves) held on from there for the T-Birds win.

Both teams now head north for a rematch tomorrow in Kent to wrap up the regular season.
