Hitmen Secure Playoff Spot with Win over Oil Kings

Edmonton, AB - The Calgary Hitmen have secured their spot in the 2022-23 WHL Playoffs with a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday afternoon.

A power play goal in the first period from Riley Fiddler-Schultz on the power play was the lone goal of the period. Outshooting the Oil Kings heading into the second, Mason Finley was able to put Edmonton on the board to tie the game in the second. Heading into the final frame tied up, Carter Yakemchuk was able to restore the lead. Edmonton had an answer just over a minute later with a tally from Loick Daigle to tie the game once again.

Yakemchuk would get his second of the game on the power play, proving to be the game winner. With his 19th of the season, Yakemchuk is now third in goals scored by defenders and leads defenceman in power play goals with 15.

Tonight's two points has secured seventh position for Calgary in the Eastern Conference and the team will face the Red Deer Rebels in the first round of playoffs.

Calgary will close their 68-game regular season schedule at home tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 26 in a rematch with the Oil Kings. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Scotiabank Saddledome on Fan Appreciation Day where the first 1,000 fans in the building when doors open at Noon will receive a team poster at Section 223. Highlights include the Hitmen Players Awards presented by Elite Promotional Marketing. A total of 10 trophies will be handed out in a special pre-game ceremony. It's also another Sunday Funday, presented by Brookfield Residential. In addition to $2 sips and snacks specials all game long, look for concourse activities from TELUS Spark and a cast of characters outfitted by the Costume Shoppe. There are also $6 Hitmen Happy Hour food and drink deals throughout the day.
