Elmira Jackals News Release

Elmira, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals (13-6-5-0) scored five times in the second period on Saturday night at First Arena to help them garner a 7-3 victory over the Trenton Devils (9-12-0-1) in front of a sellout crowd of 3,803 fans. Yannick Tifu had two goals and two assists to lead the Jackals, who now head to Reading for an important Atlantic Division matchup on Sunday with the Royals.

In the first period, Matt Vokes was able to knock the puck while falling down past Jackals goaltender Daren Machesney, making his team debut after being acquired in a trade earlier this week, 39 seconds in to put Trenton up 1-0.

The Jackals though battled back with a pair of goals heading into their dominant second period. Kevin DeVergilio drove a puck in from the slot at 2:15 of the first period to even the score, 1-1, and Andrew Sweetland extended his league-best goal-scoring streak to five games with a snap shot from the slot at 17:09 of the first period to put Elmira in front for good. Sweetland has seven goals in the last five games, and has scored eight of his league-leading 15 goals against the Devils.

Elmira's five-goal second period began with a redirect of an Eric Regan shot by Tyler Donati on the doorstep that beat Devils netminder Mike Brown five-hole to extend the Jackals lead to 3-1 just 30 seconds into the middle frame.

John Kurtz tipped home a rebound off a shot from a stylish passing play between Tyler and Justin Donati to make it 4-1 at 3:52.

Josh Brittain scored the first goal of his professional career at 4:46, following up a rebound from his initial shot and finding the net to put Elmira up 5-1, chasing Brown from the game in exchange for Shane Connelly.

Eric Lampe fed Yannick Tifu cross ice at 7:55, and Tifu beat Connelly glove side with a shot from the right circle to extend the Jackals' advantage to 6-1.

Jeff Prough fired the puck in off of a deflection from the left goal line on the power play to give the Devils' their lone second-period goal at 10:22.

Tifu banked in a feed from the left circle off of a Devil with the Jackals on the power play at 15:10 to close out the second period, giving the Jackals a 7-2 lead after two. The five tallies in the stanza tied a Jackals season high for goals in one period.

Prough had the lone goal of the third period on the power play, scoring from the left goal line again on the man advantage to cap the scoring, 7-3, at 14:49.

Machesney stopped 21 of 24 shots to start his Jackals career 1-0. Brown suffered the loss, making 10 saves on 15 shots and falling to 3-3 on the season. Connelly made 21 saves on 23 shots in relief.

The Jackals, who lead the Atlantic Division by three points over Reading, battle the Royals at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday.
