Thunder drops first road regulation loss, ends road trip 3-1-0

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Kyle Calder scored two goals, added an assist and his Bakersfield Condors never trailed, sending the Stockton Thunder (11-5-4, 26 points) to a 5-3 loss before a crowd of 4,377 at Rabobank Arena on Friday night.

Calder was aided by two goals from Joel Broda to send the Thunder to its first loss on the road in regulation in ECHL. Chris Lawrence totaled three points (1g-2a) and was also aided on the Thunder end for scoring from Marcus Watson (first pro goal) and Garet Hunt.

Bakersfield took a 2-1 lead after the first period, starting with Joey Ryan's third goal of the season just 3:03 in. Ryan took a rimmed puck at the left point and blasted a slap shot through traffic.

Watson's first goal of his pro career leveled the score, 1-1 with 8:44 left in the period when he flipped a rebound off his backhand over the glove of Josh Tordjman, after Chris Lawrence was denied on an inside-out move around a Bakersfield defenseman from the slot.

Joel Broda, scoring in his Bakersfield debut, restored the Condors lead at 2-1 when he beat Bryan Pitton to the glove on a snap shot from the right circle while skating on the rush.

Lawrence tied the game again, 2-2 just 3:05 into the second period when he scored off the rush for his eighth goal of the season. Lawrence took Fraser Clair's feed, dangled around a Condor defenseman and beat Tordjman with a snap shot from the right circle.

Back-to-back goals by Kyle Calder and Broda broke the tie and put Bakersfield ahead, 4-2 at the end of two periods. Calder's first goal of the season and in his home season debut came just 2:10 after Lawrence's game-tying goal, when he follwed up his own rebound and tucked it around Pitton's stick.

Broda's second goal of the game, from the mid-slot put the Thunder in a 4-2 hole with 2:36 left in the period when he one-timed a J.D. Corbin feed from the left wing into a half open net.

Calder's second goal of the game boosted Bakersfield to their biggest lead of the game, 5-3 at 3:22 of the final period on the power-play, finding the back of the net on a wrist shot from the right circle that seared through traffic.

The Thunder closed the scoring with 1:29 left in the game on Hunt's second goal of the season, taking Lawrence's pass at the right circle and sniping a wrist shot under the crossbar.

Pitton took the loss, his first of the season in the ECHL, with 28.saves.
